Courtesy is even more important in a virtual community though, because we don't have the luxury of tone of voice, facial expression, body language etc to help us decode what someone really means. I suppose we all have to take just a teensy bit of extra care with how we phrase things ...without going completely over the top and becoming a bunch of bland robots spouting cliches and sticking to "safe" topics. It can be a fine line. Helyn kek wrote: Quote: It was MEEEEEE, Helyn. God, I've seen some ugly babies. Like you Now theres an offensive comment!!! It's all too easy on forums such as these to misunderstand people: to misunderstand what they actually intended in their communication and to misunderstand their motives. Since most communication happens through facial expression and body language that should not surprise any of us One such example of this is my remark about burnt orange and lime green kitchens. I was referring to the use of the colours together, usually with brown woven in somewhere as well but also to the bad quality laminates that were used in the 70's too. Indeed, I lived in a rental more years ago than I care to remember with such a kitchen and believe me it actually hurt my eyes every morning!!! Now as for motives... has anyone taken the time to read rubber noggin's other posts? I have and frankly they seem helpful, informed and thoughtful. I will probably be accused of somehow being complicit in all this, which -- by the way -- I am not. In "What do you think will be so 5 mins ago" I understood the author to be saying the items were on his/her list of what he/she thought was 'five minutes ago' -- that's all. I happen to like some of the items on the list -- but I'm not so sensitive that I felt I had to lash out and attack. As for saying just 'nice' things on this forum...well frankly it begs the question what is the purpose of this forum if not for constructive criticism, among other things? I don't see the point in being a sycophant and cooing over people's choices if they've asked for input. I do agree that such feedback does not have to be cruel and on that point, I see nothing in rubber noggin's initial post that could be construed as such. Sadly, that is in contrast with some of the replies. Pix Built a (highly) modified Allcastle Maxworth 38.7 in Sydney. Especially when I ask a question. I certainly don't go out of my way to be cruel to people, but then I do have my own taste and if asked will give an honest opinion. In fact, I recall asking something similar last year in my forum. The original post did not upset me at all. I don't even think it came across as offensive. Some people read into it more than others and then other people just go on the attack. My reply was quite light hearted, I'm sure my house will date but who cares. Everything does, I'm not going to worry about it now. As I said I'll enjoy my selections while they last Happy at Home Re: What do you think will be 'so 5 minutes ago' soon? 56May 31, 2009 9:52 pm I had no problem with the first post. As I said previously, I personally don't find these posts offensive but it was when the OP posted this rubber_noggin STOP..... where are the cliche police? that just made it seems that it was more to bait people than to promote a healthy discussion and there is a very clear difference between the two. Perhaps I read it wrong. I'm all for sharing opinions and honesty and saying what we think. After all that's what forums are about, but it can't be selective. If forum users want the right to air opinions and have healthy robust discussions then that's great.... but they can't then complain when the opinions being expressed disagree with what they believe in. I'm not specifically referring to this thread, but in general, if people post inflammotory, arousing or emotive posts and people respond, perhaps in numbers, then that's part of it. If we are defending the rights of people to post what they want, we also have to defend the rights of people to respond. It can't be one or the other.... it's either both or neither. It's either an open forum or it's not. There's a few users that seem to want it that way when it suits them but then complain when it doesn't. And that is the part that I find offensive. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: What do you think will be 'so 5 minutes ago' soon? 57May 31, 2009 10:01 pm Just to add, this discussion reminds me of the one in the NZFiona thread that I'm sure a few of the long-time users will remember..... it was a while back, it was robust, it was at times heated, but it was a great discussion. It doesn't hurt to have them once in a while. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself.
