Browse Forums Finishing Touch 1 Apr 13, 2009 10:30 am HI guys, I am starting to look around (and around and around) for our new sofa for the new house and I was wondering what are some of the important features and benefits that others look for when choosing their sofa. I will be personally looking for a very hardy fabric, a great foam that won't lose shape and mid range back support all this and in the style I want.......could I be asking to much. I beleive so far its the choice of fabric and the foam that makes up the price. The cheaper the sofa the cheaper the fabric and foam....this is after a fair bit of research....... So what are other peoples favourite sofa features? Re: What is your favourite sofa design. 2Apr 13, 2009 10:48 am My big thing is versatility. I like sofas and pieces that can mix and match, go into different configurations, maybe push together to create a bed for unexpected guests. Can easily be added to with extra pieces. I chose a King Delta for DS's play room for all of the above reasons. I still have to buy another lounge suite for the main living area and I'll be looking for the same versatility when making that decision. But in saying that, I have a Natuzzi lounge suite for the lounge room that has none of these features that I bought simply because it's gorgeaous and luxurious and comfortable. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: What is your favourite sofa design. 3Apr 13, 2009 10:48 am Personally, I like nice deep seats. It has to be comfortable to lounge on, as well as have an afternoon nap on Custom downslope build Build thread viewtopic.php?f=31&t=61873 Blog http://www.buildingroyalmanor.blogspot.com.au Re: What is your favourite sofa design. 4Apr 13, 2009 11:52 am I wish i could have King Furniture's 'Jasper'. Re: What is your favourite sofa design. 6Apr 13, 2009 2:00 pm I love the King range of Sofas but we are not lucky enough to have them over here. I have however found a local company that are willing to make a sofa to our designs So if I give them a photo of what I like they are happy to try and cost it up for us. I have a similar idea for our sofa....something to lounge on and relax but that we can also mix and match if we ever need to reduce or increase in size. I have also read about something called ultra fresh that is sprayed on the foam so it stops or help stops dust mites and mildew developing in your sofa.........I get dust mites but really I don't understand how you could grow mildew or mould in your sofa I would love to have a sofa with a couple of beautiful fabric covered arm chairs but it just down't suit the space. Something like below....... Preferably close to shoulder height. I'm not keen on chairs that you sink into heaps. I'm too old for them and with my bad knees I don't like chairs that are low to the ground. DH and I are currently trying to decide what to do for the kids activity room and also for a lounge/sofa for in front of our "one day" fire. We found something we didn't mind for the family room fire area but I'd still rather wait and if we had the money buy an additional leather chair for the lounge instead. We were looking at a lovely suede type material for the living area. in a yummy deep charcoal/brown colour. We currently have a beautiful black leather 3 seater lounge and single recliner in our lounge and I'd love to add an additional recliner once we are in the house. We weren't able to purchase it at the time we bought the rest because the lounge in our last house was too small. My concern is that it looks like the style we have is no longer made. A shame as we only purchased the suite 3 years ago. Re: What is your favourite sofa design. 8Apr 13, 2009 2:36 pm personally, i like couches with wide flat arm rests. i find them useful for resting things on. ie. a small plate of toast (very specific, i know!), the remote controls, a book etc. some couches also have a flat back that runs behind the cushions. It's really useful, especially if the couch is up against a wall as it creates a nice ledge. I like this as a place to put things out of reach of toddlers and babies who'll grab anything they can (i dont have my own yet, but I'm a nanny). This way I can put the paper or remote or whatever up there and know that if i turn my back for a minute the paper won't be shredded and the tv won't be reconfigured in a way I can never figure out how to fix! I like the Kings Jasper range as well! I’m thinking about changing mine, as the space I have in my new home will suit a chase better than the 3, 2 seaters I have. The Kings one is far too big for my space and $$$$$$ as well. But it’s a great lounge set up. Wanted something low so it didn't close the room up. The lounge we picked has head rests that fold down, so keeping it pretty low, but not losing out on head support when you want it. It also has a chaise, which was a big factor for hubby. Custom build! Re: What is your favourite sofa design. 11Apr 13, 2009 8:14 pm Has anyone heard of cheaper sofas not "breathing" as well so therefore are hotter to sit on.? I have been told cheap foam doesn't breath so you get hot when lounging. Could this just be a sales ploy to spend more I love the wooden rests on the King sofa they seem like they would be very useable, like Beebie was saying keeping things out of the way of bubs is good and also to rest my drink on. I am wondering if the wood rests would become annoying or in the way. Re: What is your favourite sofa design. 12Apr 13, 2009 8:21 pm For me it needs to suit a variety of sitting positions. It needs to be able to sit adults next to each other comfortably when you are entertaining, myself stretched out reading a book, me ****** on my side watching tv and me and DH snuggling So this usually means a nice long couch with low/mid height armrests that are wide and slightly rounded. We have a 'Lounge Designs' low line one in our bedroom , which is fabric, and comfy - but I wouldn't have it in a living area. We have Moran leather couches in the family room - nice and square, and really comfortable, but aso good with kids - ie the leather is easy to clean! I loooooooove them! In the HT we have a big, fat leather Moran couch with a chaise longue - great to spread out over! We have just fairly plain sofas in the lounge - microfibre, which, I have to say, wears very well. Upstairs the kids have a huuuge Lounge Designers sofa that is 4.2 m long, and has a chaise at each end. That is soft and comfy, and works really well up there b/c so many people can fit on it, and hang off it!!! So you nearly have a sofa PER person You are right it does depend on the use. I think I am trying to find a sofa that serves so many purposes so I really want to get it right and if it means spending a bit more I think I am prepared for it. I suppose I am trying to work out weather I should be spending money on good foam, good fabric, good soil shield or just find one and see if its going to suit my actual needs rather than all the good stuff that goes into it. It seems its the good stuff that bumps the price up.........but I am one for quality and if the sales people tell me the good stuff will help the sofa last longer in all situations I am thinking of then quality might win. I like your mix of materials for your different areas to suit. Great thinking. Re: What is your favourite sofa design. 15Apr 14, 2009 2:56 pm Actually, there are 7!!!!!! Which is more than 1 per person!! There are 2 in the lounge and 2 in the fam room. Gee..when I write it down it sounds a bit excessive...but they all work well in the space!! I think, if you can, it's worth investing in better quality - that is, if you plan on keeping them for a long time. Of course , if it's just a shorter term thing, don't spend the $$$ !!! I'm in sydney and got mine 3 years ago. At that time they had 3 outlets i think now they only have one. If they do ship them interstate it will be worth it trust me. the postage may be quite high as it weighs a tonne.
