It seemed liked a good idea at the time but it was so big getting anything out of it was a struggle and because so much fitted in it it meant everything came out to get stuff from the bottom. Smaller crate type boxes work better. With lids if you can get them. You can have different ones for different toys. if you get differing colours he'll soon know the red one is cars, the blue one is blocks, the yellow one is... etc. plus you can put a picture on the front of each. Re: Storage ideas......specifically toys. 25May 29, 2009 8:05 am We had a long, low unit with shelves - it was actually meant as a TV/entertainment unit, but worked brilliantly for toys. I bought wicker baskets with fabric lining to go in the shelves, and it looked nice (I'm not a bright plastic tub kind of person). The kids could arrange their Lego creations etc on top of the unit, or even sit on it, and all the bits and pieces had homes within. It was really nothing like this, it was very square and modern and finsihed in white laminate, but you get the idea: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ It's worth looking outside the kids' furniture department. Re: Storage ideas......specifically toys. 26May 29, 2009 11:47 pm We purchased a wooden square bookcase, cane baskets to go in them, and a little table and chairs for my DD that lasted her from 0-3 years of age. All sitting in the garage atm (except one chair which is still in use). Then we purchased 3 of the Ikea long bookshelves that holds drawers and shelves and a wooden table. That did her for another 3 years but the table doesn't fit in her room and the shelves don't hold anything useful. Now she is 6 we are about to invest in an inbuilt desk with drawers above for studying. Ikea or not ... its about functionality. Looking back we should have invested in a proper bookcase/desk the first time around. Don't waste your money. Pick something the kids will use when they are 8. A desk, shelves and chair is the way to go IMO. They'll use if until their teens. Re: Storage ideas......specifically toys. 27May 30, 2009 7:55 am DeeElle Don't waste your money. Actually, one of the good things about IKEA is that you can reconfigure some of their bookcase/desktop/storage pieces into different designs. You can also add or subtract pieces, so I'm sure it would be really easy to build something perfect for a toddler that could then be modified for an older child and then change again for a teenager. Wish I'd thought of that 20 years ago! I think something like this could work as storage (just add baskets/boxes as required) with a small matching table and chairs and then be altered to this desk configuration: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I'm thinking of something like this for my 13 year old.... Re: Storage ideas......specifically toys. 28May 31, 2009 8:39 pm Kek I like that unit as well ... saw it in Ikea and its not too expensive. After outfitting our study I'm now thinking of a long lean desk with some units above for storing stuff and a few open selves below that for our 6 yo. DD spends all her time drawing on the floor, coffee table, or kitchen table so a desk would be good. Plus even though its not recommended I'd like to get her a desk for her room for studying as the open plan of our house isn't conducive to sound control .... poor thing. DH does like his metal . I did purchase her a wooden desk from Ebay but its a big solid one and not really user friendly. Might end up in the garage or back on ebay. Does anyone want a solid two drawer wooden desk painted white?? Storage ideas for kids is a hard one .. it depends on the room configuration. Agree with some earlier posts .. no matter what you purchase you still need to cull the toys frequently. Re: Storage ideas......specifically toys. 29May 31, 2009 8:57 pm We just got 2 of those desks from Ikea for our little ones. We got the chocolate for DS and the white for DD. They are probably a bit young to use the desk part but I like the idea of them and the storage space for toys. I think they were < $200 My karma ran over your dogma I would say both styles you have pictured are steel.
