Browse Forums Finishing Touch 1 Jan 07, 2017 1:45 pm Hi everyone, I've been struggling with whites/neutrals for several weeks now, and often end up back on this forum so I thought I should sign up and ask for suggestions directly.
The SHORT question is: what colours would you suggest for this kind of look: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Rustic neutral, to match lime render? 2Jan 07, 2017 2:14 pm The LONG version of the question follows, if anyone is interested... It's a mud brick cottage with small windows and large verandas, so not much direct natural light, but what there is is often quite warm and yellow/green due to the sunny climate and bush flora outside. The internal walls are all either hand-rendered, or (very dark now) tongue and groove pine, which I hate. I want to paint EVERYTHING the same shade of "white", including the pine cathedral ceiling and rafters, to banish forever the heaviness of the dark timber and get some sense of light and fresh air into the place, and get a kind of funky reclaimed vintage/ farmhouse/ industrial style. I've been labouring under the idea that I want a warm natural white, so I tried just about everything on that side of the current Dulux neutrals catalogue - China White, Stowe White, Natural White, White Cloak full, half and quarter, and Whisper White. All of them managed to look a bit sickly and custardy under the wrong light. I've spent hundreds of dollars on paint so far, as I'm buying 4 litre tins each time (smallest sample size for most whites is a litre at $50, so 4 litres at $73 is better value and I'll probably use it all as undercoat anyway). But to have invested so much and still be no closer to the right colour is driving me nuts! I'm beginning to think I actually need a very pale grey rather than a white, and I'm also beginning to suspect that some of the colours on the 'cool' page aren't really cool at all. The White Exchange, Snowy Mountains and Casper Whites all look warmer than the Lexicon to my eye. I'm pretty sure that Lexicon is too blue and will clash with everything I own and make the south facing bedrooms feel cold and drab, especially in winter. I tried Limed White Qtr and it was close but it threw a bit of purple/pink that I didn't like. Now I'm thinking perhaps Grey Pebble Quarter or maybe one of the other greys mentioned above, but I'd love to hear other suggestions on colours to try for that lime render vibe?!
