Hubby and I are first home buyers, and trying to get our head around colour schemes, feature walls, and ktchen and bathroom feature tiles. Do you know any good website we can find some inspiration? Also, what do you think of red (most likely living area) and blue (most likely bedroom and kitchen) feature walls in the same house? Are there any basic rules of not using a particular colour for the bedroom, or using too many different colours in one house? Thankful for any knowledge you could impart.... Reply from Michelle 2Jan 30, 2007 6:12 pm Hi Amy,
Feature walls – I have a gorges burnt red in my dining room, love it. I also have a really deep blue in my lounge room on my fireplace wall. Check out my website, on the home page are photos that float onto the page, look for the blue fireplace and the last photo is my dining room wall. www.denovoconcepts.com In my rule there are probably only a few colours you shouldn’t use as a colour in bedrooms. 1) – BLACK 2) - BRIGHT YELLOW. It’s to lively a colour for a space of rest. Well that’s actually the only two I can think of…. Always remember to do a light neutral flow colour for all the other walls, making your feature walls quite deep in colour. This way they are the dominant feature of the room. Work you furnishings in with your feature colours, cushions, throws, lamps all the accessories. I would be careful about putting a feature wall in every room; this could get a bit over whelming. But it’s hard to say as I don’t know the size and layout of your home. Consider the room’s functions, and decide whether it should have a feature colour or if it can survive with just wall art or stunning furniture. Websites…… http://www.completehome.com.au/ http://www.bathroomandkitchen.com.au/ http://www.laminex.com.au/ http://www.dulux.com.au/html/home/index.aspx http://www.paintquality.com/color/index_seller.html# I find it great to purchase some really good design magazines; they have just as many good ideas in them and websites…..Vogue, Instyle and the alike. May cost you a bit in mags, but do what I do… Flick through them if there is anything you like in it, buy it, if not put it back and look for another. You will get lots of styles and schemes by doing this. Have a definite design in your mind, stick to it and only look for the styles that complement your chosen design. Careful with the feature tiles as well, they may date your home in years to come. I can walk into a home and tell exactly when it was built by the border tile they have in the bathrooms. Stones and glass are yummy, and I think will be around for quite a while. Thank goodness the starfish and dolphins died out…….mmmmm yuck. Feature walls can cost up to $150-200 per wall, fixed price. If one wall per room was done, it will soon ad up. Perhaps you can buy a can/s of paint and do it yourself for about a third of the[price (if you are confident). If you have a long or large wall though, tke them up on their price per wall as the cost of the paint will outweigh the $150-200. We plan to do some feature walls and calculated it saved us about $1500. Good luck. Adrian B Re: Colour schemes - so overwhelmed 7Mar 12, 2007 8:41 pm Good to read this post. I am still not quite sure about the colour trends. I personally so far I have liked light neutral colours and added colour with the furnishings.
we will be building in the next 2 months or so and are soon to go to the builder go for the colour visit. Today I have been to Austral showroom and picked the 'cameo pink' for the bricks.... what is the trend for the roof tile colour.. complement or contrast? I think the pink cameo goes well with the greyish black (gunmetal?) . Inside I am keen to have earthy tones of tiles downstairs.. perhaps with embedded stone border(???)a feature wall in terracotta colour (? opinions) Hubby is keen about porcelain in beige-ivory but I suspect it could look too plain....comments?? Havent chosen any kitchen colours so far... white looks good but may not be practical with cooking fumes... perhaps streaky white caesarstone benchtops with woody cabinets ... tiles.??.. would the earthy tone tiles be too dark??? please give your opinions cheers, VP . I read somewhere that the colour blue is not a good idea for the kitchen as it suppresses hunger...but I can't remember where I got it from!
