Browse Forums Finishing Touch 1 Dec 15, 2008 3:09 pm Question 1) Does anybody know how thick render can be? We want to render around the garage only. The issue we have is the corbelled course of bricks above the garage. We wanted it to kind of frame the garage, but this isn't possible and actually wouldn't work out that well anyway to have it on one side only so builder has suggested that we do it above the garage only and have it stop where we want the render to stop, and then have thick render, 20mm, instead of the normal 10mm. This would "fill in" the whole garage up to the corbelled course, would this be possible, is it possible to do render that thick?
If we're goign to do this I wonder if it would be better to just remove the corbelled course all together, and just use the render only to define the garage? I asked them to move them slightly closer together as that's how I had drawn them up myself in MVH, but now I don't know if they should be spaced as in the top elevation? The elevation has other issues, the three slim windows need to move over further to the left, but that's no problem. Thanks! Re: Facade again (yawn) 2 Qs... render thickness and windows... 2Dec 15, 2008 8:24 pm Hi Rachelle,
No need for the yawn, I don't tire of looking at your lovely facade. Q1) I don't know anything about render, but my assumption would be that it might cost a lot more to do double the thickness of render?? Can they cut the bricks shorter so that they sit flush with the 10mm render? Have you mocked up the rows of bricks on MVH for us? Q2) I think the windows closer together look better from the outside, but will this look ok fromt he inside too? Is there a wall in between them? Re: Facade again (yawn) 2 Qs... render thickness and windows... 3Dec 16, 2008 8:42 am Thanks Donuts, I didn't think about the additional cost factor!! I suppose it could be double the price! I think we'll leave it at 20mm sticking out and then if the render is only 10cm it will have a 1cm capping along the top of the render - I'll mock it up just to be sure!
Re windows, thanks, I just couldn't decide! The inside is our bedroom and downstairs is the study so they'll be fine like that, just one room. Re: Facade again (yawn) 2 Qs... render thickness and windows... 4Jan 05, 2009 10:05 pm I like the way the windows are spaced i.e. narrow gap on left and wider on right. I think it looks better if they are a bit asymmetrical. Adds some interest.
