My Dad has just made a bed and matching toy box for my youngest and sent it down to us from Brisbane. I was always going to stain it as I love timber furniture but am now thinking of painting it white. My 6yo got a new bedroom suite last year and it's white and I love walking into her room and seeing it. Looks crisper or cleaner or something Anyone got any advice on how to paint it? Spray would be better? Does anyone know if I can take the bed somewhere to get it painted? Thanks. Do you want the end product to be a solid white colour, or a white wash where you can see the grain of the timber through the paint? I white washed a lot of furniture to match the babies cot and my Daughters bed, and it was pretty easy with well watered down white acrylic and I just brushed it on, and gave it a couple of coats of bees wax polish to finish it off. If you are wanting a solid colour white, then it's probably easier to spray it on, although you could still use a brush. I'm certainly no expert, but the furniture I've done has been around for over 7 years, and it still looks fine! Others with a little more expertise may have other suggestions! If you want to paint it yourself, do it with a new wide soft bristle brush. Dulux……or equally a quality brand, FULL gloss enamel paint, pure white. Paint….not spray, pray painting takes a bit of skill to not get runs. Your dad has done a wonderful job, lucky you! I'm very lucky with my Dad, he's made so much stuff for my kids over the years - little toddler beds, little table and chairs, beds, highchairs and clotheslines for the girls dolls/clothes, step stools for the bathroom and even tool boxes complete with mini tools. Such a shame that he is in Brisbane and we are in Melbourne, I'd like a porch and deck built soon!!! I might have to fly in down for the working holiday Thanks for the advice on the paint. It would look lovely stained. If I go white I want it a solid white probably matt not gloss though Will keep on thinking........ I was thinking of a panel beater. Might need to see if anyone knows somone Stormy do you have a pic of your furniture? Sorry H2B, only just realised you had replied. Kids are now in bed, so I shall take some tomorrow. I don't actually have the cot I matched the 'look' to anymore, and some of the furniture is in storage, but I can take one of the toy box for you! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! Don't think his Mother would let it in the house though
Thanks Stormy. Will await the pics, when you are ready. Thanks. Happy at Home Re: Painting a timber bed. 9Oct 28, 2008 12:39 am Gorgeous bed!
I quite like the "Ikea white". It's slightly off white, you can't tell until you hold it against something white. I think pure white gets grubbier easier, the slightly off white seems to be a bit more forgiving. Re: Painting a timber bed. 10Oct 31, 2008 6:38 am Thanks Rachelle. I still don't know what to do! My daughters suite is white but it's like a satin laminate......not sure on the product. Love it.
Will keep on thinking about it Happy at Home Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 15924 Hi, Have used the Dulux 1 step, oil base on my walls(white set), out of can it’s already a more thinner product than a final coat paint Also in water base Water or… 3 5040 Thanks mate, is there a standard off the shelf type breathable product I can apply DIY?
