Browse Forums Finishing Touch 1 Oct 12, 2008 9:08 pm I haven't posted for a while as our renovations have slowed down. However, the next step is to replace my 23 year old curtains and I have just received my first quote from a well known Sydney company. This is for my lounge/dining, family room and main bedroom. There are 5 door/window areas and the total length is 20.4 metres which extend down to the floor. The material costs $95 /metre and I also requested polyester backing plus new basic tracks. There is nothing fancy - no pelmets or ties etc - just double pinch pleating. I was expecting the price to be around $7000 but to my horror the quote was for just under $14000.
I know it is a long time since I last purchased curtains and that my idea of cost may be completely out but I am hoping that someone can tell me if $14000 is about correct or am I being ripped off. If this is the going rate I'll have to dust off my old sewing machine. Re: Curtain Costs 3Oct 12, 2008 9:44 pm Yes, I will do that. I have another person coming to our house next Saturday. I only hope I can keep a straight face if the quote is similar. Then I may have to drive from Menai (far south Sydney) to Seaforth (far north) to check out the fabric shop which Rikster's wife mentioned. It is so far I'll have to pack a picnic basket. Re: Curtain Costs 5Oct 13, 2008 10:05 am Hi neverfinished,
The secret to getting a reasonable quote is in the price of the fabric you selected. You will halve that quote by selecting a fabric that is $50 meter not $95. You definately do not need to compromise on quality at all, just need to look beyond the low price. Last curtains I got, the material was just beautiful, very full and contempoary...hung just below the ceiling to give the appearance of height in the room. It was just exactly what I had been searching for...only cost me $45 meter. I went through a decorator who knew his stuff and materials. Hope this has helped Mrs B Re: Curtain Costs 6Oct 13, 2008 10:35 am Mrs B Hi neverfinished, You will halve that quote by selecting a fabric that is $50 meter not $95. But it will reduce the overall price. You're right tho' .. you don't need to spend $95m fabric for it to look good. Re: Curtain Costs 7Oct 13, 2008 12:02 pm Thank you for the replies. My husband picked the fabric and everything else he looked at he hated. This is the reason why we have waited so many years to replace the curtains as he refuses to compromise. The cost of this fabric alone should be less than $6000 so it appears greedy for this company to charge nearly $8000 extra for lining, basic tracks and making.
However, I think that the shock of this quote may make him rethink his choice. Joles, you are not alone in finding this price hard to imagine. Should I admit to my original plan that I would pay no more than $5000? (and even then I thought I was being overly generous ) Re: Curtain Costs 8Oct 14, 2008 8:44 pm You mention that the quote was from a 'well known Sydney company' - could that be part of the issue with the price? Some smaller firms can offer better prices as they pay less for overheads, advertising etc.
From memory, curtains for our first house were around $12k, but that was for the whole house... Re: Curtain Costs 9Oct 15, 2008 7:03 pm Yes Cocteau, I think you have a good point. The next quote (on Saturday) will be from a small local firm who we purchased our children's bedroom curtains from several years ago. They no longer have a shop front as opposed to the well known firm which has just set up a new display store in inner Sydney. It will be interesting to compare. I am not sure whether Perth has its own way of doing things in regards to this. Most of Perth has class A (sandy soil), except for some areas near rivers or hills. 2 13100 Looking to tile the facade pillars rather than rendering.
