Browse Forums Finishing Touch 1 Oct 07, 2008 11:33 am Does anyone know if I can paint over laminate? If so, what sort of paint should I use? We have some old laminated bookshelves in an ugly brown colour and I was thinking of sprucing them up. It seems such a shame to throw them out as they are still in good condition. Re: Paint on laminate? 2Oct 07, 2008 2:45 pm Yes you can do that. I think any paint will do fine, but I would probably use an oil based sime gloss enamel. . You just need to sand them first, and use a primer coat before painting.
Greg Re: Paint on laminate? 6Oct 08, 2008 9:06 pm You need to use a preparation paint first, before you paint straight over laminate with normal paint. Unfortunately, you're limited to a small selection of colours, I'd suggest using a product called 'ESP' (you can get it at any paint shop or hardware store) and then use a semi-gloss enamel on top. In doing this, it will enable you to have a selection of colours that's as long as your arm... Re: Paint on laminate? 10Aug 23, 2009 7:31 pm ESP….and full gloss enamel is the best way to go. I think that ESP stuff would be handy to have around the house anyway, for little projects. I guess a full gloss enamel over ESP may be easier to keep clean than the White Knight option? That's one thing I've been worried about, ease of wiping. Not that I wipe my kitchen cupboards THAT often...but the kitchen is an area that needs regular cleaning. What's the deal with the White Knight stuff, is it just a fancy repackaged gloss enamel anyway?! I tried to find out at Bunnings but had no luck. Re: Paint on laminate? 12Aug 24, 2009 8:28 pm White Knights good for painting tiles, but now after seeing what my painter has done for me and my clients on the cupboards, I would only use it for tiles. Which I’m going to in my kitchen…..when I get around to it. I've seen other pics of people having painted their tiles and I think it looks fab, but there's a dearth of pics around of painted laminate, although Mikaela's cupboards looked fantastic I must say. I'm really at sixes and sevens over what to do with our kitchen, but I'm thinking I will start a new thread instead of hijacking everyone else's! Re: Paint on laminate? 15Sep 12, 2009 10:45 am Hello again all, Doing a test run on an old laminate desk we don't care about. Coated the laminate in ESP as per instructions on bottle, then did a coat of water-based gloss. Put on a second coat today. Lookin' good! Will post pics later.
