Browse Forums Ideas Box 1 Jun 21, 2011 5:12 pm Dear All Members, You are likely to have read recent reports about the growing number of cyber attacks on what you would think were impenetrable site servers of organisations or companies such as Google, CIA, Sony, and more recently Sega. As a result, information that had either been collected about, or submitted by users had been compromised and subsequently made available on the 'Net for download. For example, these include, and not limited to, credit card details, full name, birth date, email address, physical address etc. homeone.com.au, alike any other website on the Internet, is not free from this risk and as well-protected and securely managed a server may be, intelligent hackers will continue snooping until any vulnerability is found putting any information stored on our servers at risk of being exposed, particularly your personal information you provide to us. As we strongly respect and aim to further protect your privacy, we have come up with a number of suggestions to better protect your identity and minimize misuse: NOTE. This does not purport to be comprehensive nor should this be construed as professional advice. PROVIDE DIFFERENT INFORMATION Username and Passwords - edit password from Control Panel 1. Consider a different username and password combination that is not the same for other websites you may be members of or registered with, or change the same username at the other website/s; otherwise 2. Ensure your [encrypted] password at homeone.com.au is unique and not the same as other passwords you use. It is not uncommon for people to use their email address password across various sites which is not recommended. 3. Consider using an email address which is NOT linked to or used for banking and financial purposes or other highly sensitive uses - or set up up another email address to manage sensitive info (always remembering to print and then delete sensitive information from your email inbox). PROVIDE LESS INFORMATION Optional Information - edit from Control Panel 1. We do not require your date of birth, nor do we or have we used this for marketing purposes. We recommend deleting this. 2. 'Location' field is not required, so you do not need to provide your suburb. 3. We do prefer completion of the State field however this is and has always been optional if you're comfortable disclosing this. 4. If you're happy linking to your own blog via the URL field or in your signature, ensure your blog does not contain any information which reveals your personal identity and you may want to ensure your physical address is not made public. 5. In a scenario whereby the complete forum.homeone.com.au database can be accessed, this would render your personal messages being viewable. We strongly advise that you delete any PM that contains sensitive information. 6. Facial recognition software is now advanced and becoming popular which theoretically means that any photo you have uploaded here (or to any other site) could be used to pull up a match of other photos of you from other websites that may contain associated personal information. Unaware of public tools that allow this, Getty Images employs the use of a similar tool to track individuals or companies that misuse their licensed content, so it is possible. You might want to ensure that your privacy settings on other sites which display your photos are set to be strict, or consider removing such photos from homeone.com.au. PEACE OF MIND Credit Card Information 1. Advertisers credit card information is managed by a third-party merchant gateway, Westpac's Payway, and this information, in part or whole, is NEVER stored on any homeone.com.au server.
