You can tell as the stretch looks ok in the middle but gets worse towards the edges of the picture and things get out of proportion. I think you're talking about say, a portait layout ending up looking like a landscape layout? This is because of upload size restrictions by the portals. If we don't resize the pics, they look stretched (and terrible!). Usually the upload limit size is 150kb and the size is 800x600. So, when I upload any portrait shots, I paste it onto a white background in publisher, save the blank page and pic as a jpg and then resize it.
