Browse Forums Real Estate 1 Mar 06, 2010 9:28 pm Im not sure where to find information, but when you are at an auction, can the auctioneers do anything at all? Im new to auctions...yeah ranting/spewing abit, etc. i just made a couple of bids, and when i bidded at 285k he prolonged my bid out (fair enough) but then at 290, where everyone was clearly not interested anymore, hypothetical 8th call, then looked at me questioning me if i had the deposit, which i was offended by. Anyways, as soon as he got to 295, on the third final call, he just quickly ended it without giving the opportunity for me to even open my mouth to bid further on the third final call. Im just wondering if you can intercept after he "closes the calls" saying you want to bid further, as i believe it wasnt fair. but if there is "no fair game" in auctions then, i just need to be told that. ...maybe im just shattered and complaining *shrugs* Re: Auctioneers, can they do anything they want? 2Mar 06, 2010 9:45 pm It's in the auctioneer's best interest to get the highest price possible because it will increase their commission so he/she must have been convinced that you said or signalled that you were out. Anyway, you had the opportunity to make a bid before the 3rd call and failed to say anything so you can't blame the auctioneer - unfortunately it sounds like you left it too late. Re: Auctioneers, can they do anything they want? 3Mar 09, 2010 9:57 pm Each auctioneer is different and it pays to know their teqniques. Some say going once, twice, three times then wait for EVER. Others say going once, twice, three times then put the hammer down before you can blink. That's the game. DON'T wait until the 3rd call if you want to bid. Unfortunately an auctioneer can play favourites too giving some time and others not. They can't do "as they like" but there is flexibility on how they call the auction. Better luck next time. I had an old shower unit that broke on me and when I took it off, there were only 2 water pipes, instead of the normal 2 water pipes and a shower head pipe.
