Browse Forums Real Estate 1 Jan 26, 2009 3:29 pm A comparison of median house prices with median household incomes in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Britain and the United States found that Australia had the most cities in the "severely unaffordable" category - where house prices are more than five times the median income.
The Sunshine Coast in Queensland was the least affordable in the world. The Gold Coast came third, behind Honolulu, and Sydney was fifth, behind Vancouver. Melbourne and Adelaide were equal 12th and were still less affordable than New York (14th), London (16th) and Dublin (32nd). 24 out of 60 most unaffordable cities were Australian. The public policy group Demographia, which conducted the study, also found no Australian city made it into the Affordable Housing Market list. Most of the UK and certainly anywhere where you could comfortably commute into London is horrendously expensive. Also, houses would be much smaller in terms of both indoor space and block and a lot would be semi-detached if not terraced. Then you would have to deal with worse education and higher petrol prices. Income would generally be higher but that's not the case for every profession. My husband came over here to do the same job and we took a drop in pay but when you factor in the cost of living we're better off overall. We'll never go back - we love Melbourne. It looks like they compared home prices against salaries paid in each location so it's based on relative income. Agreed, That's why we decided to build over here - an established house in Rowville where we are now would cost around $150k more to buy than it's going to cost us to build from scratch in Mernda and this way we get the exact finish we want.
