Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 23, 2020 12:45 am Hi All, I am building an extension including a garage and granny flat to an existing home in SEQ. The problem I have is integrating the new roof with the existing without it causing too much of the existing roof needing modification. My current design is a large gable roof that will look ok and not involve much modification to the existing roof. The problem with this is it does not deal with a small section (highlighted in photos) that needs to be roofed over to make the overall design work. My designer came up with an alternative roof design that Would look better than the gable but the builder said replacing the entire roof would cost about the same. So not really an option. I am looking for something that will tie in well with the existing house and modify the existing roof as little as possible, while resolving the need to cover the highlighted area. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance. You are looking to modify at least 60% of you existing roof. I'd say your builder isn't too far off the money whichever way you go.
Stewie Re: Roof design for addition to home 6Jul 23, 2020 11:16 am the simplest solution would be to use a flat roof over the whole section including garage, entry and hallway with a simpler hip/gable only over the new living areas but would prefer to have the entry to the original house through the wiw and keep new bed 3 bigger with the window but need to see the whole original floor and site plan to be more specific Re: Roof design for addition to home 8Jul 23, 2020 6:02 pm consider a skillion roof sloping towards the boundary over the new garage and entry hall Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ with a simple hip/gable over the new living areas and bathroom and add a parapet above the garage door and a similar roof over the new entry porch..done well it should look quite modern and stylish.. Re: Roof design for addition to home 10Jul 24, 2020 7:57 am Your designer should be coming up with a few of these scenarios and doing a couple of 3D isometrics to show you what is possible. He/she is using a CAD program so they should be able to do it easily. " So if I went with the gable is there an easy way to cover that small section of roof highlighted in the picture? " Not really, except for a small flat section over that area which would probably look tacked on. If it was me I'd extend the roof up as per the rest of it so it was pitched as well.
