We moved into a new house with an old upright gas oven. We want to replace it with an upright electric oven. Does anyone know what is involved in installing an electric oven? We are completley clueless when it comes to ovens Cheers Re: Installing an electric oven 2Oct 02, 2008 4:51 pm Depending on the power consumption, you most probably will have to run a 15 amp cable to it with a separate switch on your power box. (or was that a 10amp? in any case, its different to the other power points you have in your house). Re: Installing an electric oven 3Oct 02, 2008 5:51 pm austin80 Hi We moved into a new house with an old upright gas oven. We want to replace it with an upright electric oven. Does anyone know what is involved in installing an electric oven? We are completley clueless when it comes to ovens Cheers What is the total amperage for the oven Look up the amperage for each part of oven and add them up EG oven amperage = Griller amperage = Hotplates total amperage = Get these figures and add them together, this will l dictate what size cable and fuse you require. Fuses available in South Aust 10,16,20 and 32 Amp fuse goes with a 1.5mm cable 32 amp fuse goes with a 4.0mm cable 40, 45 and 50 amp fuse goes with a 6.0mm cable In South Australia a separate shut off switch is required within 1 meter of the stove The only exception is if there is an existing suitable cable, no switch is required Check with your licenced electrician, he would know more than I do, I'm only reading this of off a dummy sheet and I'm happy to be corrected Best Price Wardrobes Sliding door robes | Walk in robes Deco panel | Mirror | Melamine 26 to 28 Cottage lane Hackham M: 0402 927 376 http://www.bestpricewardrobes.com.au Trade welcome Re: Installing an electric oven 4Oct 02, 2008 7:04 pm Kevs mostly right, still depends on a few things, length of run, how the cable is installed, type of cable will determinecable and fuse size. The fuse or breaker is there to protect the cable, not the appliance.
You will need a sparky in to install, and more than likely a plumber to disconnect the gas. Re: Installing an electric oven 6Oct 02, 2008 9:25 pm I would imagine you would need a electrician to install a seperate fused power outlet independent to the rest of your existing wiring. If you overload the cable it will melt and catch alight So its important that the fuse trips first Best Price Wardrobes Sliding door robes | Walk in robes Deco panel | Mirror | Melamine 26 to 28 Cottage lane Hackham M: 0402 927 376 http://www.bestpricewardrobes.com.au Trade welcome Re: Installing an electric oven 8Oct 02, 2008 10:43 pm Fu Manchu I would imagine you would need a electrician to install a seperate fused power outlet independent to the rest of your existing wiring. Yes you would unless as I metioned above there is a suitable one already in place. The electrician will test the cable first to make sure it's ok . I've no idea how they test it thou. Maybe do a fault loop impedence test. Thanks mel I have those terms before, but never seen it done Best Price Wardrobes Sliding door robes | Walk in robes Deco panel | Mirror | Melamine 26 to 28 Cottage lane Hackham M: 0402 927 376 http://www.bestpricewardrobes.com.au Trade welcome Re: Installing an electric oven 11Oct 03, 2008 7:53 pm Just in case you are interested
Insulation resistance test involves using a megger (which is why it is also called megger test or meggering) its basically pumping volts (usually 500v or 1000v depending on what the cable is going to carry) down the cable to test the insulation resistance of the cable. Break down in resistance will cause low readings. Nothing exciting, but you have to be a bit careful as you can get a good boot. Fault loop impedance still has me stuffed! its to do with ensuring the impedance of the earth is low enough to operate the protective device (cb) within a certain time. You can buy testers now that test this to ensure it complies. Or you can do the long crappy calculation I'm not a house basher so there could be other things they have to do that i have forgotten Re: Installing an electric oven 13Oct 03, 2008 8:27 pm mel OT but Kev i gaven't forgotten the kitchen plan, i'm just slack Will try to do it this weekend With the amount of remote jobs I'm doing ATM, I could just about drive over there Best Price Wardrobes Sliding door robes | Walk in robes Deco panel | Mirror | Melamine 26 to 28 Cottage lane Hackham M: 0402 927 376 http://www.bestpricewardrobes.com.au Trade welcome Re: Installing an electric oven 14Oct 03, 2008 8:28 pm mel Just in case you are interested Insulation resistance test involves using a megger (which is why it is also called megger test or meggering) its basically pumping volts (usually 500v or 1000v depending on what the cable is going to carry) down the cable to test the insulation resistance of the cable. You can also get a HV tester that pumps 5000v out. Very low amps though. some people lover meggers, some hate them. The most technical electrical tester I use is a powerpoint tester with 3 lights on it. Got it from Bunnings for about $12..tells you If the powerpoint is wired correctly or not. It's very simple, If it shows a fault ring the sparky...doesnt get any easier (for me anyway) Best Price Wardrobes Sliding door robes | Walk in robes Deco panel | Mirror | Melamine 26 to 28 Cottage lane Hackham M: 0402 927 376 http://www.bestpricewardrobes.com.au Trade welcome Re: Installing an electric oven 19Oct 04, 2008 12:27 pm mel the plug tester? looks like a 10A plug on a keyring? they are great for a quick test, though i have managed to blow one up ok enough off topic.
