I'm asking this question on behalf of my DH. Our house is at lock-up stage. The question is, if the house was to burn down tomorrow ( major touch wood), would it be covered by the builder's insurance? I understand that if bits and pieces are stolen or go missing from the house it is the builder's responsibility, but we were just wondering about something very major happening. Is it still covered? thanks in advance House insurance 3Oct 01, 2008 9:33 pm Your builder should normally give you a copy of the insurance policy I think - we got one when building. I believe Jo is correct, the builder's insurance should cover everything to handover (probably excluding any items that were non builder supply), but see if you can get the policy copy and check for your own peace of mind! Should really get a copy of it ourselves though too Re: House insurance 6Oct 02, 2008 8:47 am We have paperwork verifying the builders insurance on the property and this continues until handover - confirming this is a phone call I made last week to SGIC, our insurer, who said we need to have insurance organised to kick in from the day of handover.
However, anything on site which does not belong to the builder (in our case air-con which has already been done but was done privately) is not covered by builders insurance or indeed by anything, we would have to live with the loss if house burned down before handover. This obviously only applies to those builders who allow you to do anything on site before handover, I believe some will not let you do anything and perhaps misunderstandings over insurance is part of the reason I thought this would be a popular question but I haven't been able to find any similar posts.
