Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 30, 2008 2:56 pm Hi everyone
We are just organising some new appliances to go with the new house and were after some advice with regards to brands and what not. Basically we have budgetted around 5k for a fridge, washing machine, dishwasher, microwave and vacuum (not heaps I know but that's budgets for you). The fridge needs to be a side by side due to the size and shape of the recess. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. Re: Let's go shopping - advice on appliances 2Sep 30, 2008 3:15 pm Someone say shopping!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just bought a new F/P washing machine; don’t ask me about it, I’m not all that happy with it. I miss my old one. Have fun shopping though!! It takes too long to do a wash, while it saves on water it doesn’t save on energy…IMO. Because it doesn’t have a large agitator, it knots everything up, so I have to de tangle while I’m getting it all out. With a few words of advice to it all as I’m reefing it all out! I’ll get used to it, 22 years with the same washing machine makes for a hard change when it’s a bit different. It doesn't come with this ancient agitator thing which is making knots and it also tends to damage the clothes Re: Let's go shopping - advice on appliances 7Sep 30, 2008 4:52 pm Windowexpert……I have a brand new washing machine $1000 worth!
With the new agitator (short one) …….it ties everything up! Also maybe you need to slow down your spin cycle. Mine on fast spin sounds like an aeroplane taking off and looks like it is going to walk across the room! Re: Let's go shopping - advice on appliances 9Sep 30, 2008 5:43 pm Mel, I like to do full loads. Unless it’s permanent press stuff, then its only small.
I know how to use it better now, I read the manual. But it’s still not as good as I thought it would be, it hasn’t baked me a cake yet! I don’t really eat cake, but thanks Mel, that’s a nice offer. Also we’re back to the Oz post thing. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Let's go shopping - advice on appliances 12Sep 30, 2008 8:38 pm We went Asko on Dishwasher and washing machine. Dishwasher is still in the shed but the washing machine is brilliant so we think they are worth the extra money.
For Fridge we got a Samsung twin door stainless from HN. Waited for a sale and got them to hold it 'till we move in. Also they gave us 6 year extended warranty at almost nothing. Not sure if other have noticed, but if we shop as a couple we never get any discount. But if I go myself they are falling over themselves to bargain..... I would be waiting 'till you move in for the microwave and you know the exact size you have for it. Wait for a sale and go for it..... regards sean Re: Let's go shopping - advice on appliances 13Sep 30, 2008 9:04 pm We have one of the new F&P aquasmart top loaders... It is fantastic... using the same amount of water as a front loader and you still get the benefits of being a top loader.
You also place the liquid or powder in a seperate chute and then it is sprayed into the bowl and onto the clothes. So you don't have to pour it or sprinkle it all over the clothes. I'm def getting an asko washing machine as my parents have one and it's the bees knees. I'm getting a dyson vacuum cleaner in liu of ducted. My parents have ducted and we all hate it. Also a majority of my house is floorboards so to me it made sense to exclude the ducted vacuum. Fridge is the one i'm stumped on. I def want a fridge that has ice and water. I keep hearing mixed reports about brands also. Re: Let's go shopping - advice on appliances 16Oct 01, 2008 12:23 pm Ok my experience...
Washing Machine - about 1.5-2yrs ago we bought a westinghouse front load dishwasher. Get enough although walks half way across the room as I moved it after being installed correctly - so it is not level. It has push buttons and I don't like that in order to use the 35min quick wash I have to press it 6 times to get to the cycle that I want. (I can only forsee trouble with the springs going) although touch wood no probs. Also I still haven't figured out how to soak. I can't remember the website I think it may have been getonce.com and i gave competetive prices & locations. I purchased it from Retravision castlehill. Just rang up, gave them the model, asked them the best price & they were at least $50 cheaper than good guys. GG's said there was no way they could compete with the price given by RV. DIshwasher - we currently have a Bosch & love it to death, need to buy a new one for our house as well. Go for the best star rating for price. Upon purchasing this the noise of the machine was a factor hence we paid extra. The only thing I would recommend with a dishwasher is try to get a concealed element we have one but my sister had a F&P and she had so many melted spoons and cup lids on her exposed element (may only be a factor if you have kids) I am forever finding spoons and cup lids at the bottom. Only prob with this one is you don't choose the length of the cycle, it has an automatic detection (what a joke) so it determines how long to run the cycle - but it is always 90 mins. We won't be as fussy on the next one as the kids are older (6 & 4) and the dishwasher is not near the loungeroom. Vacuum, we got a dyson upright - brilliant on carpets. After spending years vacuuming with a crappy dragalong finally bit the bullet, paid the $400 odd dollars - never looked back If you have alot of carpet I recommend getting one. We will have all upstairs carpeted & even though we are getting ducted v (came in the package) I will be using the dyson upstairs. If you don't get one straight away - save up. If a friend has one borrow their's if u r not convinced. I borrowed my neighbours, that convicned me, I lent it to my inlaws and they bought one, so did the sister in-law (man I should be getting a commission good luck 1st time bldrs, fussy and impatient! Re: Let's go shopping - advice on appliances 17Oct 01, 2008 1:45 pm On the microwave - look for one with Inverter technology - faster cooking/reheating and better for defrosting. We've got a Panasonic and are very happy.
On the dishwasher side - it's so personal - take along a few of your plates, bowls, cups, wine glasses to make sure they fit. After 4 years - we're in! Great idea although DH would die of embarassment I am sure..... also decide whether you want a 12 or 14 place setting. We basically fill it everyday and ours is a 14 place so i wont compromise on that. 1st time bldrs, fussy and impatient! Re: Let's go shopping - advice on appliances 19Oct 02, 2008 7:51 am You cant go past German engineering, usualy Bosch is quite good, with the warraties to match. Dont trust any appliance that doesnt back up their product with a good warranty. And for an extre $60 or so, get the extended warranty (but check small print as it may not be worth it) Re: Let's go shopping - advice on appliances 20Oct 03, 2008 10:34 am Hey all
Just for those in the same boat, we ended up with the following Fridge - Westinghouse 610L side by side Dishwasher - Bosch Washing Machine - Fisher & Paykel 8kg Aquasmart Vacuum - Dyson upright Microwave - LG Took an extended warranty on the fridge as well Versaloc is a mortarless besser block system that still needs a properly engineered footing. If you just do a 400x200 footing it will fail in time. At 17m long you need it… 1 15364 Thank you so much for the effort. We will use it to talk with builder.
