Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 04, 2020 2:39 pm Renovating an apartment kitchen atm, and not sure what to do about the floor. The kitchen is about 3.5x2.5cm, with single doorway entry opposite the window. We removed the tiles and ?mortar down to the concrete floor. We need to raise the floor about 3cm, up to 4cm in some places, and then start tiling. In terms of levelling, buying self levelling compound seems to be too expensive $40/20kg given how much needs to be raised, and also it's not recommend to raise that many cm at a time. If that's the case, do I need to buy a cement/sand mix, lay down a few cm, and then use the self levelling compound to even out the final layer. (+Using the appropriate primers/sealers between layers). Thanks! Re: Levelling/raising concrete floor 2Apr 04, 2020 3:12 pm Previously it was common to lay tiles on a fresh mortar bed, often in a slurry of neat cement. With good tile adhesives people started using tile adhesives instead. You could do either a mortar bed or self leveller. I would bulk up the self leveller with sand to reduce the cost, or mix up your own mortar with an additive like SBR (Lankolatex 751) to improve the adhesion and flexibility Re: Levelling/raising concrete floor 3Apr 04, 2020 6:34 pm Get a tiler to do a screed before laying that's the best way to get it done for a reasonable cost. Or if you are handy just do a sand cement mix and screed it yourself. Registered Building - Always happy to help where I can and simply loves the game. DM me if you need help in VIC.
