It is best to be prepared. You can get mortar lab tested and doing a forum search using keywords like mortar, lab, test etc should raise a few threads that discuss these issues and costs etc. An initial search using only those three keywords suggested bought up the following threads: search.php?keywords=mortar+lab+test Maybe also measure the perpends, they had to be 10mm +/- 3mm the last I checked but that might have changed.
