Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Feb 20, 2020 4:05 pm hi Guys , so I just discovered that the standard included ducted aircon with our builder is a single phase, 12.24 KW with 2 zones. We're building a 36 square house and that seems awfully inadequate . I must admit though that I dont know much about aircon capacity . Also apparently the two zones cannot run simultaneously ... most likely because its 3 phase? So Im guessing there is no option but to upgrade to a 3 phase more powerful aircon with additional zones?? Need advice please .. Re: Ducted aircon too small?? 2Feb 20, 2020 4:44 pm I have single phase action air con 17 kw and easily runs our home 50 squares with house about your size 36 squares, have 4 zones but never needed to run all 4,I regularly run 3 zones even when outside temp has hit 45,you probably have a lower quality and smaller less efficient unit, not enough hence only can do half your house, but maybe with some smart zoning 4 zones ,you could run areas your it using,I would want a bigger unit. Re: Ducted aircon too small?? 3Feb 20, 2020 7:22 pm The included ducted system in my 38 square home is 20kw 3 phase. When I was speaking to smart zone controller suppliers they said I could easily downsize to 14kw, by having dedicated temp sensors in the room and more precise control on the temp.. So maybe investigate these options with your builder? (my builder wouldnt let me use 3 rd party controller) Re: Ducted aircon too small?? 4Feb 22, 2020 3:18 pm ourrawsonbalmoral38 The included ducted system in my 38 square home is 20kw 3 phase. Yes agree the size that they are offering a a standard is definitely small . Will look into the bigger size Re: Ducted aircon too small?? 6Feb 22, 2020 3:38 pm We've got 205m² of living and are running a 16kw 3phase Daikin with 8 zones. The AC company said it wasn't big enough to do the entire 8 zones at once but if we went larger you are wasting $$$ having a system that is typically larger than you need to efficiently cool to your requirements. Having said that you can open every zone and it does cool the entire house, particularly if you just run zones in the areas you are in to remove the heat load first then open the remaining zones. If you take your plans to several AC companies you should get a feel for what is required. I got several quotes. Most quoted for a 16kw system (based on their own calcs) one quoted for a 20kw system that in hindsight would have cost us significantly more to purchase and run over time. There is a sweet spot for initial cost and running and it is not wise to just think that bigger is better, but it definitely sounds like yours is on the small size for the size of the house. That’s helpful. I’ll probably be looking at at least 6 to 8 zones too . So something that can handle the load of them all running at once would be ideal, although it would be quite rare that we would hav them all running except for maybe times when I have people over on either extremely hot or cold days . But I’ll definitely contact some ac companies and get a feel for what would be the minimum size unit we would need . Not sure if that works? I was told the issue is the headspace clearance requirement on step 4.
