I have owned a mud brick house by the coast for about 15 years- I believe its about 30 years old .Structurally it seems pretty good- although recently I've had some issues with a second storey balcony - attached to an upstairs bedroom. As I airbnb this property during a recent clean up for a booking - I found some rot in the timbers on the balcony railing - so in trying to replace and secure the railing - Ive notice movement from a post attached to the mud brick base wall which is a main post for one side of the timber railing on the balcony. The post was attached with a long coach type screw - into the mud brick wall which has come loose and is no longer screwing back in tightly - I need to find a solution here -as the house has been booked already from the 27th - 5th Jan. Ive notified the tenant - but its not ideal to present the property ( where the balcony is is effectively out of bounds- as whilst ive tried to secure the railing temporarily - the mere fact that I've informed the tenant and put signs up on the sliding door leading to the balcony may not prevent curious kids ) So please excuse my ignorance but is there a solution to securing the bolt back in the mud brick wall - I don't know its actual length -perhaps 6- 8 cm as I didn't remove it - the interior of the bolt cavity seems ok- but obviously dry and not allowing the bolt to grip ( unfortunately no pics available ) I don't have the luxury of trying to get someone to repair it - as its too busy a time by the coast being summer here to even get a tradie to look at it - so Im hoping someone with some experience with muddies and fixtures - could forward some advice - Ive thought of trying a rapid drying cement -silicone or other - to the bolt cavity -but don't really know if that would work or is a good idea - so any assistance would be very gratefully accepted cheers Re: mud brick fixture 2Dec 27, 2019 7:38 am This is the unfortunate situation with mud brick. All you can really do is make sure hole is clean and free dust. Do not disturb the area. Use an epoxy fixing system that can go into the hole and then the fixing. May need to increase the length of the bolt/screw. Bunnings would have some epoxy systems. I am saying that double brick has similar thermal performance due to thermal mass effect.
