Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 26, 2008 3:47 am Hi Everyone,
Our plumber is currently trying to talk us out of having the controllers with our instant gas HWS (Rheem 26). He tells us that if you put in the controllers you can't have the water at two different temperatures in two different rooms at the same time. For example, you can do a load of washing on warm (ie; 30 degrees) if someone is having a shower at 45 degrees. Or for a more practical example, in a double shower you can't have different temps coming out of each shower head like you can without controllers and with normal mixer taps on each. his other gripe was something about when a temperature is set by the main controller you can't override it with subsequent controllers and therefore need to walk up to the main controller to change temps. my other question is if you have a main controller in the kitchen and main bathroom only with no controller in the ensuite, can you just use the mixer to control the temperature in the ensuite given there is no controller? (i think i am confusing myself!) I am interested to hear other people's experiences with the controllers. I'm not sure if he is leading us up the garden path! I'ts not a question of the plumber not wanting to fork out for them as we already have the controllers (3 of them), i think he has just managed to confuse us! thanks for your thoughts Helen Re: To control or not to control (HWS) 2Sep 26, 2008 4:36 am We had one in a rental once - if you set the temperature on the main one, the secondary controller changed, and vice-versa.
My thought is if you can't set independent temperatures, who cares? Just turn on the cold water tap some more! (or the hot less!) Isn't it just the same as having a 'normal' hot water system with the temperature knob on the side? After 2 false starts, a year living overseas, two more world trips and 3 years of uncertainty we are now starting the build process again - hopefully for real this time! Re: To control or not to control (HWS) 4Sep 26, 2008 11:03 am Hi Helen,
We have it at my parents house and absolutley love it! Even though you cant have 2 independant temps at once, there never seems to be an issue, if 2 people need a shower at the same time, then we just put the temp to 42. (which is what we all shower at anyway!) We have the main controller in the kitchen and have another 2 controllers in both the bathrooms, and i never have to go down to the kitchen to set the bathroom temp, you can do it from the bathroom, so not sure what the guy is saying about that!! In regards to the q about not having one in the ensuite, im assume that it will run off ur main controller ie. in your kitchen, but ill have to test it out tonight and let you know!!! Hope this helps and hasnt confused your more! Cheers, Sam Re: To control or not to control (HWS) 5Sep 27, 2008 4:41 am Quote: same time. It is only efficient if a solar water system is very closed by. Re: To control or not to control (HWS) 6Sep 27, 2008 7:36 am From memory (it was our old house), the temperature you set on the controlelr is the maximum temperature, so you can still have cold or luke-warm water coming out of the tap if you so want, but the hottest water coming out will be at the temperature you set on your controller.
In our old house, we had Rinnai Infinitiy with one controller, the temperature was never an issue, we just put it up and down as required. Our washing machine is a front loader however and I think they heat up their own water. BTW, don't people have issues with having two showers on at the same time, or a shower and a tap in the kitchen - with us it effects the water pressure and the temperature of the shower (regardless of controller/no controller)? Re: To control or not to control (HWS) 7Sep 27, 2008 7:06 pm Hi,
I had the controller at a previous house and it was fantastic for bathing my guide dog. Just set the hotwater temp to something nice and comfortable and plug a hose onto a hot water tap and away we went. They are also good with children as you can control the maximum hot water temp so they can't burn themselves. Dale.
