Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Dec 01, 2019 9:53 am Hi guys, I have a load bearing wall to remove but it is now a bit confusing with the references in the internet to say it would require permit and building surveyor etc... and a renovator to say no need anything at the moment to remove it except for a builder certificate or something like that. I am in Melbourne. Any advice would be very much welcome. Also if you guys know a service or build who could help with the work, please send me PM. Many many thanks. Re: Load bearing wall removal 2Dec 02, 2019 10:32 am You will need a building permit, removal of load bearing wall is a structural alteration A registered builder will not give you any certificate unless there are rocks in his head and it would be worthless anyway If your job is worth doing, pay the price and get it done properly. I could confirm that. I called the council this morning to ask the question and their answer was that they are not doing any permit thing anymore but a building surveyor will. I then contacted a building surveyor and they said the same thing as you. Definitely need a permit for removal of load bearing wall. The interesting thing is that the building surveyor would then send a copy of everything to council if i go ahead and finish the removal. Re: Load bearing wall removal 4Dec 04, 2019 4:27 am I am glad I pointed you in the right direction and wish you well with your alteration. By law building surveyors are required to forward a copy of building permit drawings to the council for records only, however there is no secondary assessment other than cursory review. Council Extract for Building Applications (BA) WA "...Structural Engineers Certification Details are required for all steel and masonry structures by a Practising Structural Engineer, which must including: site classification, footing details and wind loading. Further information may be required, this will be determined upon assessment" The rules have tightened as a result of poor building practices and recent near building collapses, ie opal towers, mascot towers,etc.....
