Browse Forums General Discussion Re: Disturbing smell, but where’s is coming from!? 41Sep 30, 2008 12:44 pm What about an air purifier. I think they are a few hundred dollars but I have a friend with extremely bad hayfever and she swears by it.
There are lots of different brands Might be worth a go http://www.airiononics.com.au/iqair.htm Re: Disturbing smell, but where’s is coming from!? 42Sep 30, 2008 12:56 pm Hmm, that could be good. I’m just not sure it’d work that well…the smell really is quite extreme at night. The lounge room smells vaguely of smoke enough so that my eyes sting and my throat starts to hurt. The study smells so strong it makes me feel nauseated and headache-y.
Would air purifiers be strong enough to combat this? They must smoke CONSTANTLY in there! I picture these guys sitting around with black singed hair and grey skin. Ugh. Lol. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Disturbing smell, but where’s is coming from!? 43Sep 30, 2008 1:38 pm Hmm…I’m just reading about air purifiers now, and one site says the filter will get used up quicker than the guarantee warranty thing if there’s smoke around. Another 2 don’t even mention smoke in the list of things it filters and purifies. They just list pet hair and dander, mould, dust, etc. Hmm.
Oh wait, I’ve found one called the Honeywell or something…a person who’s reviewed it says it’s great if there’s a smoker in the house or friends who smoke when they come over. It’s also fairly small, which is good. The others I saw were so huge. People are saying their lungs felt renewed. That sounds excellent!!! Now the price…*cringing in advance* Oh, $195. That’s not painful. Not if it works. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Disturbing smell, but where’s is coming from!? 44Sep 30, 2008 2:42 pm The more you write about it, the more it looks like some serious problem with the building ventilation/air movement. Are there any ducts with openings in your flat ?
As for the body corporate, if you had a solid proof of bad air quality, in the form of results of a professional air test, they couldn't fob you off and they'd be forced to do something. And you can get some benefit from your asthma, be it bad or mild - get a chit from a quack and make it sound as serious as you can. That old proverb about a noisy bird getting the worm is often true. Air purifiers and such will be just treating the symptoms and covering the problem, not fixing it! 1. The cost. 2. If I went to the doc, I'd probably have no major lung issues cause really, the asthma IS very, very mild and also only annoying when in smoky or smelly rooms and stuff. And in a doctor's, I wouldn't be anywhere like that. I also want the air purifier as a quickish fix so that when my mum comes to stay (now maybe early November), she'll be ok, as this will be her room during the visit. She is WAY more sensitive to these things than me. *worried* How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Disturbing smell, but where’s is coming from!? 46Sep 30, 2008 5:35 pm I've been in similar situation several times.
I lived in an apartment once where smoke from the entire floor seemed to 'pool' at our front door and waft inside. We put a 'sausage' under the door and had a heavy duty air filter going all the time. It helped a little but certainly didn't eliminate the problem. The best remedy in that place was discovering the right combination of windows and doors to open to create enough internal air pressure to force the smell out again. As soon as we shut the crucial window the air pressure would change and the smoke would come flooding back inside. The second problem we had was in an old house that had a flat on one side. It seemed that when the house was divided the dividing wall was really nothing more than a large cupboard (on our side), and a thin wooden wall. The other side was a bathroom. In this case the woman next door used to drench herself every morning with some foul chemical 'cologne' which she must have purchased by the litre. To stop that seeping into our house I got my roll of trusty 'gaffer' tape and taped along every single crack and join inside and outside the cupboard. I literally had to make it airtight to stop the flow. In your case - if the problem is smoky air seeping into your apartment - then I believe only reversing the air flow; or making an air-tight seal along the point of entry will work. Is there any way you can get air flowing into that room ? Likewise, is it possible to pull up the carpet or whatever and completely seal the area ? Do the hard jobs first. The easy jobs will take care of themselves. - Dale Carnegie Re: Disturbing smell, but where’s is coming from!? 47Sep 30, 2008 6:01 pm Quote: 1. The cost. Matter of fact how much does it costs ? For a flat it shouldn't be that expensive ?? Anyone knows ? In the long run it may be cheaper than an air purifier. Quote: 2. And you can always run a few laps around the block and then wave a burning *** under your nose just before going in to see a doc . I used to smoke for 5 years! lol It's more being in a room full of smoke.
Anyway, in answer to the previous question, no we can't pull up the carpet! lol We just got it laid! *fret* The smoke is coming in from the front door, and we can't seal ALL around the door. We'll get the snake thing, but the other 3 sides have air coming in a lot too. If you put your hand to the sides and top, it's this icy cold blast coming through (even though it's not cold outside, and even though "outside" the front door is the foyer stairwell area that is also closed by the security glass doors and the door into the underground garage. I don't know why there is such a strong breeze and airflow coming in, but that's not even 100% of the problem, as I've said. The strongest smell of smoke is in the study, and yeah, windows open helps a LOT, but we simply can't have them open all the time. We make music and if the window is open, we can't play very loudly or people will complain. Yes, there's headphones but they're not always practical. Also, in Winter it's just too cold to sit in here for hours on end with the window open simply so we can breath and not feel sick. I WISH THE PEOPLE WOULD MOVE OUT AND MORMONS WHO DON'T SMOKE OR DO ANYTHING WOULD MOVE IN! lol How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! You just cut the length you need and remove the backing and stick it on the door frame...we've used it to stop drafts around our rattling windows. Just explain to the person in the shop what you want it for and they will be able to point you in the right direction. You've got to stop the smoke getting inside. Once it's in you've lost the battle - air filters won't be enough. And if there's no 'counter-flow' you can create by opening other doors & windows, then I think sealing is the only answer. Do the hard jobs first. The easy jobs will take care of themselves. - Dale Carnegie Re: Disturbing smell, but where’s is coming from!? 51Oct 01, 2008 12:25 pm Yeah, I hear ya. I will go into Bunnings on the weekend (we’re going there to get some plants and an outdoor setting anyway) and ask about that tape. How does it work though? I picture this tape stuff you stick around the door, that works fine when the door’s closed, but how do you open it? I see the tape coming away with the door or sticking to the frame whenever the door opens, and then you have to re-stick it or re-attach new tape, is that right, or does it somehow stay effectively in place?
Last night wasn’t so bad in terms of the smoke, though the windows were open from 3pm until 10pm…when sitting in the study I felt there was enough clean air, but every now and then the smoke smell would waft from somewhere, and also from outside would alternate bug spray and cooking. *rolling eyes* I have no idea. I just want NORMAL non-stinky air! I’m used to living 5 houses from the beach where the only smell we got coming in was the occasional fragrance of seaweed. lol How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! You stick it on the door frame as shown below Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ See the black strip on the inside of the door stop...that is the weather seal...it sticks to the frame (not to the door) and if done properly should stay there. I'm sure there are other types as well, but this is what we have done. That does look good. As long as the door still closes, that looks like it’d be really good. (we wouldn’t be gassed somehow would we, by having no air getting into the apartment from anywhere at night when all our windows and balcony doors are closed, would we? Lol) *irrational fear* How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Disturbing smell, but where’s is coming from!? 56Oct 04, 2008 12:37 am That is interesting, thank you!
Luckily, the smoke hasn't been at all noticeable for the past few days/nights. SUCH a relief! (at least for now) One day I'd still maybe like to get an air purifier just to have the pleasure of really clean air, but for now fingers crossed we won't need one! How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Disturbing smell, but where’s is coming from!? 57Oct 04, 2008 2:07 pm I wonder if it's a case of just one particular person not being in the building ? If you've narrowed down the partment where you think the smoke is coming from, can you see if there car's in the garage ?
Or (strange as it seems) sometimes even the prevailing winds can be the cause, creating air flows. When the seasons change sometimes the prevailing wind direction changes, altering the air flow through a building. Do the hard jobs first. The easy jobs will take care of themselves. - Dale Carnegie Re: Disturbing smell, but where’s is coming from!? 58Oct 04, 2008 6:56 pm That's really interesting...maybe it does have something to do with the wind thing, BUT I do doubt it simply because the front glass buzzer/intercom security door completely keeps the wind out (well, sort of) and when you get inside there it's very warm and smoky (if there's smoke coming from the apartment that is).
Last night was fine. This morning when we left to go out at 11am, the stairwell area smelt strongly of smoke (but inside our place didn't. Probably not enough time for it to accumulate to that extent yet). When we got home at 6pm, it was clean and fresh smelling everywhere. *shrug* It may well be just one person, yeah. I've not really noticed cars as yet...there are 15-20 parking spaces down there and cars seem to come and go a fair bit. I wouldn't probably be able to narrow it down to anyone in particular...(we don't drive so don't regularly go down there) How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing!
