Hi Ash! Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Disturbing smell, but where’s is coming from!? 23Sep 23, 2008 8:51 pm Grace, IF it truly is a smoke smell, it will be emanating from porous materials. If carpets are new and the room painted, what other porous materials are there in the room? Curtains etc??? Have these cleaned if they seem to be a prob. Apart from that, the MOST EFFECTIVE SOLUTION to smoke odours is OZONE. Restoration companies often have ozone generators as part of their fire restoration services. Call Craig of Grout Perfect and ask him who can treat the room with ozone. Expect a bill of at least a couple of hundred bucks though. I still think you firstly need to eliminate the possibility of odour sources from within the room. New carpet odour should dissappear quickly.
And to you others... ME addicted to H1?? Never! I just pushed a wrong key and landed here by mistake! Well OK. I do have an occasional look to see who's misbehavin, (and its usually the same ones)! The new carpet definitely does, but it's been in for exactly a week now and is diminishing slowly. The curtains don't smell at all. There are curtains in the lounge room and both bedrooms, and all are fine. The smell only comes from around the wardrobe/in the wardrobe (mirrored built in robes) in the second bedroom, which backs onto our bathroom (which doesn't smell) and also backs onto the stairwell foyer area where there are 2 other apartment doors, and that area doesn't smell either. The curtains in the second bedroom are nowhere near that area anyway.
I just can't figure it out, but I do think it's coming from an outside source still. I definitely don't want to shell out yet more money if the smell is just gonna come back everyday, you know? How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Disturbing smell, but where’s is coming from!? 27Sep 23, 2008 9:21 pm Is your carpet wool? Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Disturbing smell, but where’s is coming from!? 30Sep 23, 2008 9:54 pm Yep, tis 100% wool. It's lovely and soft (but hard wearing. It's residential extra heavy duty). I can't recall the name (it's kicking around this forum somewhere), but it's lovely. lol Smells though. When I first came inside the day after it was laid, it was like a wall of carpet smell hit me! How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Disturbing smell, but where’s is coming from!? 31Sep 24, 2008 11:08 am Does the room that has the smell in it, get a lot of sun?
More so than other room?? Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Disturbing smell, but where’s is coming from!? 32Sep 24, 2008 12:13 pm No actually, less. It’s probably the most shady room in the apartment.
I find that as long as the window is open, it’s fairly ok. You can still smell vague sweet smoke, but it’s not bad. As soon as the window is closed, within mere minutes, it’ll be so strong I feel sick and have to leave the room again. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Disturbing smell, but where’s is coming from!? 33Sep 26, 2008 7:47 pm grace this does sound stupid but that has happened to me before in a house. I can almost taste the smell! It was a smell exactly as you describe I would feel tired and run down after being in there too. it wasn't always there either. sometimes it would be very strong and other times you'd not even smell it. I had a mate who was a clairvoyant and did a cleanse on the house and in particular that area and what do you know, it went.
If it ever did return (never as strong as it was) I would burn sage or just incense and it would be gone. I would also look at Michelle's suggestion very seriously of getting your apartment treated with ozone. that is an amazing treatment for mystery odours. Failing all that, sell your apartment and move to sunny happy layed back WA That will cure all the stinky smells Re: Disturbing smell, but where’s is coming from!? 35Sep 30, 2008 11:17 am Do you have an apartment above you, could they have spilt "Bong water" and it has seeped into the ceiling cavity? Re: Disturbing smell, but where’s is coming from!? 36Sep 30, 2008 11:51 am Burning incense, sage, etc and/or using air fresheners is just treating the symptoms. It could be that you've got some fungi growing somewhere there ?? Check the website of that SBS doco "Is you house killing you":
http://isyourhousekillingyou.sbs.com.au/home/index.html You might consider getting an air test done in that room, to find out the source and the cause of the pong. It's probably costly, but as the smell makes you feel sick, it would be money well spent. It’s not bong water though. The suggestion makes sense, but in this case it smells like “active” smoke, not old stale smoke or stink, you know? And it comes in waves. The mornings are fine, the evenings smell really strongly.
The incense thing…hmm. I HATE the smell of incense, so I doubt this would work very well for me. lol. I wouldn’t be totally against having someone come and “cleanse” the place spiritually, except the apartment block is only 12 years old and I’m 99% sure there are no spirits in my apartment. I’ve worked out it IS definitely coming from the outside. The people in the apartment just behind and next to us smoke, and in the mornings nothing smells and the air is fresh and clean (except for the ever present strong smell of the new carpet of course), but by the late afternoon the stairwell foyer area smells strongly of smoke, and the closer you get to their door, the worse the smell. In our apartment, we can smell the smoke from a certain part of our lounge room, if we open the cabinets/cupboards in the main bathroom it smells noticeably of smoke, and as always, in our study, mainly emitting from the built in wardrobes. It seems to me that the lounge smell comes from our front door, seeing as the stairwell foyer area right outside smells (it’s a secure building with the main entry door always closing, so the smells can’t escape), and the bathroom and study smells come through the backing in the cupboards. Is this possible? I mean, obviously it is, but is there anything we can do about it? I have mild asthma and feel quite ill by the smoke. Obviously the neighbours are smoking inside a lot at night and it just seeps out and into our place. We can’t ask them not to smoke or to smoke outside. It’s their apartment, they can pretty much do what they want in there. But at the same time, it’s making me feel physically sick, and we didn’t spend thousands on new carpet and nice new things to have them stink of smoke from the neighbours, you know? We’re going to buy one of those fabric snake things you put along the bottom of the front door, but that’s not going to do a whole lot I think. When I hold my hand up to any part along the side of the door, there’s this strong wind coming in from outside. And it comes in all the way up both sides, at the top and at the bottom. So the snake would only provide a superficial seal at the bottom, but at least it’d be something I guess. I don’t know what we can do for the bathroom cabinet backing and mainly the study wardrobe back…we could I suppose put a second back in there made of something other than wood or whatever the current backing is made from, but what’s odd is that even if the wardrobe backing IS wood of some sort, the actual wall still should be stronger than that, and not letting any smells through. Especially not that strong. There are no air vents in the study. Now I know what it is, but it still baffles me how this is getting in. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Disturbing smell, but where’s is coming from!? 38Sep 30, 2008 12:03 pm Man, they must be chain smokers if you can smell their cigarette smoke from inside their home ..... Do they perhaps smoke outside in the foyer area? maybe you should look at putting in some vents in the room to help ventilate the area. just my thoughts If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then quit. There's no use being a damn fool about it. W.C. Fields Brought Established. Re: Disturbing smell, but where’s is coming from!? 39Sep 30, 2008 12:12 pm Even if it's just the smoke, the air test might be useful, by giving you a concrete proof of a problem. Then, if someone there smokes a prohibited substance (you've said it's sweetish??) you could discreetly ask them to cease and desist. If it's from cigarettes, you can approach the strata management and demand remediation, like sealing of cracks, gaps, etc, improving/fixing building ventilation and so on. It would work even better when you wave a doctor's certificate about your asthma at them.

I’m not quite sure what the sweetness is, but it’s not quite pot I think…out in the stairwell foyer area it’s definitely just plain old ciggie smoke.
They don’t smoke in the foyer area. When you go out into that area, you can smell it and the closer you get to their door, the stronger it is, so it’s just coming from there. I can’t even imagine how hideous the air would be inside their actual apartment!!! I will contact the body corporate, yeah. Hopefully they can do something. The problem is though that there’s no onsite manager, so if anyone came around to see about the smell, they’d most likely come during the day when it’s hardly noticeable. It’s only from about 6pm onwards that it gets really bad. It’s just such a shame because all our stuff is so nice and the carpet is new, and we don’t want everything stinking of smoke…I mean, I used to smoke, but never inside, because the air would irritate me too much and it’s be uncomfortable to breathe. I don’t have major asthma at all, just very mild asthma that gives me an uncomfortable and annoying wheeze and bit of a cough if there’s a lot of smoke in an enclosed area and stuff like that. I’d also be concerned that even if someone did come and find the smoke smell present, that they wouldn’t be able to find where it’s getting in. I can put up with the bathroom smell as it’s hardly noticeable and only if you open the cabinet doors. I can even put up with the lounge room smell as it’s quite a large room and it’s only in certain areas and it’s not THAT bad and it does tend to dissipate quickly, but the study. That I can’t deal with. It’s our computer room and we also make music (or try to). If I have to sit in there with this smell, all my songs will have titles like “It stinks” or “I feel sick” or “Stinky smoke blues” and such. lol How the hell did I become a senior member!?
