Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 24, 2019 7:06 am Hi All, I’m hoping someone can help me as we’re considering buying a property in Brisbane as our family home, but before doing so we want to ensure the renovations we are planning are plausible and within budget. Essentially these are the things we’d like to investigate before committing to buy: - building and pest inspection - asbestos presence and cost of removal - complete renovation of kitchen - introduction of elevated decking area, connecting to the new kitchen - introduction of BIRs in all bedrooms - complete bathroom renovation x2 (if budget permits) Additionally, we’d like to see if it’s possible to introduce some sustainable design principles along the way. Where would we start with this sort of exercise and who would we get in to inspect before we buy the house? I really feel quite lost! Many thanks for your assistance! I really feel quite lost! Start here: http://www.yourhome.gov.au Read the lot, or just pick and choose the sections you are interested in. Your taxes paid for it, and it is an excellent resource. If it raises questions or you just want to discuss aspects, come back here and you should get a lot of specific help. In Brisbane, there are hundreds of building and pest inspectors, so just look them up in the yellow pages/Internet directories. Better still, ask friends and colleagues for recommendations. Re: Where to start when buying a house? 3Jul 30, 2019 1:56 am - complete renovation of kitchen It depends on a number of factors e.g. size, shape, the level of finish you want etc. If it was me, I would probably go to the nearest IKEA and look at their kitchens, find one that you think might be similar to what you might want and that should give you a rough price guide. - introduction of elevated decking area, connecting to the new kitchen Similar to above, there are so many different factors to this. Size, shape, materials. I would probably ask a carpenter if it's complicated or just do it myself if it's a simple box shaped area. For me personally I prefer the wood-look composite materials because I don't have to worry about termites and re-oiling etc. - introduction of BIRs in all bedrooms. Talk to a carpenter/cabinetmaker. Re: Where to start when buying a house? 4May 03, 2021 7:01 pm For Pest Control, in case you had a termite barrier installed ensure to check the warranty agreement if an annual termite inspection is required. Some may void the warranty if you have missed an inspection. Yeah I don't know why I came to a forum. Place is full of wierdos/pedos thought internet may help but I suppose I'll try my luck with someone in person. Cheers.
