Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 19, 2019 8:52 pm Hi We are planning to put an outdoor kitchen beside our alfresco. It will be partly covered by the eaves of the house but if it rains water will get to it. Is this a bad idea? Has anyone got an outdoor kitchen that is exposed to the elements? Does everything just corrode or warp? What would you use to build it with? The plan is to have rendered block frame and then cabinets in the middle with a bbq. Thanks Re: Outdoor kitchen BBQ 2Apr 19, 2019 9:20 pm setting outdoor kitchen in the exposed end of alfresco seems to be in trend, you will get the full outdoor feel, esp if you have a larger block with a few meters in front of you before the fence and has a view to of sky etc. we did consider it initially and then decided to set up the outdoor kitchen along the inner wall of the alfresco where it is most sheltered from elements. Our outdoor kitchen, however, is not a BBQ area, infact we don't even have an integrated BBQ, but a standing oven+gas cooktop, range hood, stone bench top, sink, under bench cupboards, integrated fridge etc. We intend to do heavy and messy cooking outside - and we don't want direct rain and sunlight ruin the setup. We will also be installing motorised outdoor blinds for the alfresco to cover it up from heavy rain or from the westerly summer sun. - but having said all these, I will only get to see a brick wall when I cook! One of my friend however, set up his kitchenette and bbq, in the outdoor facing exposed end of his alfresco. It is one of those all stainless steel setups, which should stand strong against the elements. I guess its all up to what you want, both have pros and cons. Re: Outdoor kitchen BBQ 3Apr 21, 2019 1:57 pm I would 100% not use cabinetry outside again, especially if it has a chance of getting wet. I had 2 completely warp through a combination of sun and water. I would build it out of block / brick, and instead of cabinet have the doors done with stainless steel inserts. Cost effective and looks good. Also remember that most stone manufactures wont guarantee an install outside, so you will need to use natural stone or an alternative for the benchtop too. Re: Outdoor kitchen BBQ 4Apr 21, 2019 8:03 pm We had ceaserstone outside and it became very dull, so if you use stone make sure its ok for outdoor use (ceaserstone say that it isn’t recommended for outdoors) We just had stainless steel legs under the cabinet, no kickboards. The area was relatively protected. Re: Outdoor kitchen BBQ 5Apr 25, 2019 9:19 pm Thanks for the responses! The outdoor kitchen was going to have block walls which were to be rendered then cabinetry inside. I am starting to think rather than cabinetry will make the entire kitchen out of block because of my concern that it will just warp in the elements and have nice stainless steel or wood doors on the fronts and a concrete or rendered benchtop. We are thinking instead of gas cook top to go with a charcoal top.. was having a look at mygrill but not sure how weather proof they are... council barbeques seem to weather ok and they are stainless steel and out in the open so see how it goes... would also put in provisions if we ever wanted to change to inbuilt gas we could... wanted a sink but not sure how we would connect to sewrage for drainage without having to dig up most of my yard, would be able to get water there just not get rid of it.... will keep thinking about it Thanks for letting us know.
