Browse Forums General Discussion Re: Evapourative cooling in Brisbane 2Sep 16, 2008 7:33 pm I'm not in brisbane but have been to the gold coast in summer and it is fairly humid so I would say it would struggle.. but someone up there might know more... Re: Evapourative cooling in Brisbane 5Sep 17, 2008 7:47 am Have already, from a company here in Brisbane that deals mainly in these coolers, and they say its fine except for 3 or 4 days a year when its hot and the humidity is above 70%. Of course that may be a biased answer. It would be good to hear from those that already have one installed. Ill try to post the humidity graphs later on as they look remarkably similar to Melbourne's. Re: Evapourative cooling in Brisbane 6Sep 17, 2008 2:43 pm I went through all this last year when we tried to buy an air cooler for our apartment. We were sick of sweltering, with the only relief being pedestal fans from Kmart, and we don't like the too-cold and dry effect of air conditioning. My parents have ducted evaporative cooling at home in Melbourne and it's really nice.
Every single place (Harvey Norman, The Good Guys, Retravision, Clive Peeters & Anthonys, etc, etc) told us they don't work up here because it's just too humid. The closest we came to "success" was one guy who told us that if we had a really large place with a heap of windows open and a day that wasn't TOO humid, it'd be alright probably, but with our 3 bedroom apartment and no real cross-breeze, it'd make everything wet, humid and mouldy in hours. Ugh! Luckily we're now moving into our new place (2 days to go!!!) which has ceiling fans. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Evapourative cooling in Brisbane 7Sep 26, 2008 8:07 am The stigma seems to have really stuck to Queensland.
I am trying to get those Humidity charts up but the file format doesnt allow it, (I know, try harder Stu) It shows clearly that if they work in Melbourne that they will work here. (If you can trust the charts) I think its worth investigating, as the energy savings are huge. Re: Evapourative cooling in Brisbane 8Sep 26, 2008 11:37 am I recon you got none and buckleys of getting it to work effectively.
Here in Perth most of our aircon is done with evap systems. However we also get on some hot days a very humid NW seabreeze and that is when the bloody things are awful. We have to turn the air con off and put up with the sticky heat. (often the NW humid breezes are not too cooling and refreshing) Yuck! I cringe to think what the comfort would be like in Brissie Re: Evapourative cooling in Brisbane 10Sep 26, 2008 6:13 pm as a keen weather watcher I may be able to did up some sort of info on that
i would say the issues start before 70% quite confidentaly Re: Evapourative cooling in Brisbane 11Oct 05, 2008 6:35 pm Perth...
http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/ ... 9225.shtml Brissie... http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/ ... 0842.shtml These are the best ones available as the figures you want are not recorded for Perth metro swanbourne site which would if anywhere have the most similar weather to us being coastal. The Perth AP is inland but still on the coastal plain. I chose Brissie AP because they have a good long record of weather data. The 9am and 3pm conditions will have records of the relative humidity on average. It doesn't high light the extremes we may often get in Perth. Re: Evapourative cooling in Brisbane 12Oct 05, 2008 6:40 pm I found this one, the Kwinnana BP refinery records. That is right on the coast.
here in Perth that would be a better measure and they have recorded relative humidity http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/ ... 9064.shtml they are records from 1955 to present. click the little graph icon on the left for an easier to compare chart on relative humidity Re: Evapourative cooling in Brisbane 13Oct 05, 2008 6:43 pm so for quick comparison
Perth, Kwinana http://www.bom.gov.au/jsp/ncc/cdio/cvg/ ... taticPage= and Brissie AP http://www.bom.gov.au/jsp/ncc/cdio/cvg/ ... taticPage= Re: Evapourative cooling in Brisbane 14Oct 06, 2008 7:40 am Im no expert but to me it looks like Brissie may actually be a candidate for evaporative cooling if those charts are accurate. I realise that Perth is under 60% in summer, but Brissie is close behind, and still below 70%. Am I right Re: Evapourative cooling in Brisbane 15Oct 06, 2008 6:05 pm well the things you need to look at are that those graphs are based on averages only. The daily anomalies will not show. The Kwinana stats are from over 58 years. The Brissie stats are only over 14 years of comparison. They were the most comprehensive stats I could find though. To highlight specific evaporative ac ugly days for us, I would have to recall the exact day .
I wouldn't do it if I were you because it will be a lot of coin into the wind if it is uncomfortable. Re: Evapourative cooling in Brisbane 17Oct 09, 2008 1:21 pm Stu, I live in SEQ for a year, and the humidity is ALOT worse than Perth. We have ducted evap in our place here, now I would replace it in a flash if my house wasn't a 'knock down"
Gets humid here.....especially since I live on the coast. The evap does not work well at all when it's humid. In fact it makes it more humid inside, things feel damp. If I lived in QLD I would never put in Evap. I think the sales people just want to sell you something, if they say they are OK. Saying that, some people hate refrigerative air con, so I do suppose it's personal preference. Hope you get a reply from someone in QLD Re: Evapourative cooling in Brisbane 19Oct 14, 2008 2:18 pm why don't you go and knock on someones door that has one in qld and ask them?
