I went the full hog and bought 2 of the biggest and best residential evaps and installed them both (myself i might add) I over engineered them to over 60 air changes per hour which is double what you would do for Melbourne. The result is a comfortable temperature (quite cold if you sit directly under the vent). A ducted refrigerated system would cost approx $15000 (installed ducted) and my new system cost $9000 (installed ducted). The running costs are approx 60c per hour (ducted refrigerated would cost about $1.50 per hour) and it uses about 100L of water per day (based on 9 hours of running both units). I believe that the system works very well provided you design it properly (60 air changes per hour) and your not expecting to chill your house down to 24 degrees C. Its not too bad damp wise, but there is a slight "moisture in the air" smell (i believe its good for your skin ) All in all, I can say that im happy with the result so far (during these record temperatures) Oh, and the relative humidity has been about 50% during the hot part of the day, over the last week.
