What a strange situation...
Thats what I thought too...strange situation for sure!
A few years ago I was a single mother putting myself through uni, working erratically (i.e. not much) .... and renting privately ....
It was a bloody struggle but I did it. And there's thousands out there doing the same.
The government does add rent assistance to your income... approx $100 per fortnight.
There is not enough public housing for people in her situation.... none..... the waiting list is in the thousands if not the tens of thousands in some states. Public housing availability is at crisis levels.
BUT in saying that... it's somewhat beside the point. The tribunal got it right in my opinion. She has had plenty of time to be trying to make arrangemets.... as twygyn as noted... she's not even packing up. If I was in her situation I'd be packed (except for essentials) and ready to go at the drop of a hat. There are properties out there if people are prepared to go and find them.
Great result in my opinion
Sorry, I may be a bit sensitive on this but "how does a single mother afford stuff" line hits a bit close too home for me.. It's a bit of a stereotype... responsible single mothers will place putting a decent, safe roof over their child/childrens heads above all else. And will sacrifice every luxury to do so.
