I can usually sort most things out on my own but in thinking over my latest project I have hit a snag and decided to ask for some advice. I live in an apartment so space is at a premium. For a long time I have been mulling over the idea of building a loft bed with a desk and storage underneath. I want to avoid a 4 leg design by attaching the head end to the wall. The wall I want to attach the supporting crossbeam to is plasterboard offset from the concrete wall about 8cm. Up until this point I had assumes the plasterboard was a lot closer or glued to the concrete. What would be the best way to do this? My current ideas are... 1) Cut a huge hole in the wall and mount directly to the concrete (not a fan). 2) Use some kind of spacer to offset the cross beam to the outside face of the plasterboard wall, think pipe with bolt running through type thing. Something in my mind tells me the clamping force on this type of mount would need to be huge to overcome the downward force of a bed with 2 people on it. 3) A few shelf like brackets attached to the concrete wall protruding through the plasterboard wall with the crossbeam attached to them like a narrow shelf. 4) It's far too complex, give up and use 4 legs. 5) Something I haven't thought of. Thanks in advance for any info or ideas. I look forward to becoming a more active member of the forum. Thank you alexp79 and gommeqld for your advice, that's very helpful, thanks 3 6295 Any structural alteration to your home requires building permit.
