It's not gas, there is nothing in it except the iron grill and the damper at the top can be pushed in to be open.
I've done some research and as mentioned by Joker it seems like it is a coal burning fireplace and apparently it's not possible to burn wood in it, because of shallow depth and chimney angle, etc.
