Re: Evaporative cooling useful? 2Sep 15, 2008 6:03 pm very very good in our victorian dry climate... if you are building then would be silly to install refridgerated.
much better for your health then refridgerated and also you don't get a dry mouth and feel the chill from the a/c. Split systems are still good though if you have established house and need a a/c. (much too costly to install evap). Like our current house we have split system but for the previous 20 years to that I have lived in evap houses and much prefer it. Re: Evaporative cooling useful? 3Sep 15, 2008 6:17 pm We are building and are having evap cooling installed by our builder. Summer's will be more bearable for me It was January when we were looking at displays and even on hot 36-38 degree days the evap cooling made a HUGE difference. Evap cooling is cheaper to run, it's like $0.20c a day or something. It's not as cold as refrigerated but alot cheaper to buy/install and run. Happy at Home Re: Evaporative cooling useful? 4Sep 15, 2008 6:47 pm What they said! I have a Brivis system though I understand that general wisdom suggests Daiken (sp?) is the best of the best.
I would rec that you make sure you get one that can be zoned as well as one that can operate fan only - excellent on those nights where you are expecting cool change and don't want to freeze but still want to go to sleep cool. Aaahhh.... re; cost....I can't say I've ever noticed *any* discernible increase to my power bill over Summer but we also have a house that doesn't have many windows on the West side and those that are have awnings & some trees shading them. We tend not to use the system until the temp exceeds 30 degrees. Because of good cross ventilation and the above reasons, it's just not necessary. I don't know how I ever survived without evap cooling! It's one of those personal choice/preferences things. There are always going to be those who prefer one, and those who prefer the other. I know people who have Evap, and hate it b/c everything gets damp, then others, like you, love it, so, like I said, it's a personal preference thing. Yeah def a personal preference thing... although I have never had a problem with anything getting damp? nor have I heard of that happening!! I have split system now and certainly not against refriderated and it certainly works better as a cooler, just prefer the healthier evap. We are lucky to have a choice with our dry climate!! Up north they don't have the choice... Re: Evaporative cooling useful? 7Sep 16, 2008 10:21 am Looks like the evap cooling quite useful for Melbourne area.. I'll put it in my wish list for now and let see if I still have $$$ floating around in my pocket at the end of the day... Best way to go, but this piece of advice will save you in the long run and wont cost you an arm and leg in your electricity bill. "Builders buy all there evap units in bulk and all are the same wattage rating" so if you building a 40sqm home or 20sqm home, you will be getting the same unit. Get an independent quotation and ask them the minimum wattage need for the size of my house then go for the next unit up" All my electrician/air conditioning friends say this, and I will be doing it myself. Re: Evaporative cooling useful? 10Sep 16, 2008 10:44 am HappyHome I thought the general rule of thumb was evap works better for 'dry' climates (eg. Perth) and refridgerative for humid (eg Sydney) climates Not sure where Melbourne falls. Isn't Melbourne Dry???? Great piece of advice (even tho you won't change my mind on reridgerated!!! ) Our builder offers an Evap unit that they openly admit is nowhere near sufficient to accommodate the house's cooling needs! We will only use it on those really hot days but I know it will be worth it! We have evap in our current house and poor DH had to carry our big mattress all the way downstairs and back again during summer to the longe room with a split system as the evap wasn't enough to sleep comfortably at night. It's costing us an extra $8k or so but well worth it IMO My karma ran over your dogma Re: Evaporative cooling useful? 14Sep 16, 2008 11:46 am petal Snake Best way to go, but this piece of advice will save you in the long run and wont cost you an arm and leg in your electricity bill. Evap will drop your temp by 10 Deg's at the most but you have to leave windows or a door open when it's running.
If your in QLD go the Evap ... brillient in that climate. In Vic, aircon is the go. You don't need to freeze the whole house or have ice on the windows. We went split system and it's great. But .... be careful who installs it. We got the system via Good Guys Narre Warren. Very happy with price & service but their install guy was an idiot!! Turned up late, was grumpy and I saw him try & kick my dog!! (His young assistant was lovely) Then, when I pointed out the unit was crooked, he tried to tell me it had to be for drainage!!?? My husband had to basicly front up to him & tell him. "I'm paying you, level the unit!" What a cowboy!!! Timbacare - Save Your Furniture! Re: Evap Vs Aircon 18Sep 16, 2008 8:44 pm wakeboardandy I think you have them mixed up... evap would be useless in humid qld!! yes evap is quite useless in humid area's even in adelaide when we have a really wet heat the evap is useless gets all muggy and almost unbearable. still though, its stupidly cheaper than split systems, blows the air out of the house, doesn't recycle it good for allergies and smokers; and if you get a hot humid spell its a perfectly good reason to goto the movies -Nathan 2nd-Fix | Blog Building with Desyn Homes previously with the insolvent Endeavour Homes |
