I realise this is principally a home building forum but I am hoping someone with appropriate knowledge could help me.
I am a member of a community theatre group in Wollongong. I have a question about a building alteration that will allow us to increase the space above the stage which at the moment is quite low. The building was originally a community hall built in the 1950's.
These are some pics of the roof space and hall. There are steel structural trusses at approximately 6m centres which are connected to large timber beams running along the apex of the trusses. From these the ceiling and roof are supported.
The ceiling line is flat across the centre section (approx 5m) which is the highest part of the ceiling. It then slopes down to the side walls - however this slope limits the headroom above and directly in front of the stage.
The first support from the back wall is basically in line with the proscenium arch and as such could effectively be embedded in this wall such that it could be hidden if the ceiling were raised either side of the truss.
My question is without significant structural modification could the ceiling line be flattened out to create a higher overall ceiling up until the second truss (about 12 m from the back wall) which would create more headroom for the lighting rig and sets.
Essentially this would mean having a horizontal ceiling until it intersects the roof structure. (I estimate it would roughly do this 3-4 m from each side wall from a rough approximation in the roof space.
I have included photos of the ceiling void and inside the theatre.
Before engaging an engineer / builder I am just wondering if it is a realistic option to consider. Note I work as a mechanical engineer (trained to diploma level) so I have some engineering knowledge but not in structures / construction.
I would really appreciate any advice.
