Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Nov 15, 2018 2:26 pm Hi l found what looks like termites in a dead tree ten meters from my house but not sure , l called someone to get the tree cut down and removed tomorrow . l haven't noticed any in or under or any sign of them on my house. My house is 7 years old and has steel support beams and steel foundations which is good, but it has wooden sub floor and walls .Don't new houses in Victoria require to be built with terminate proofing ? l hope so ? Should l call my local pest exterminators. If it is termites how much will l be up for to get rid of them. l heard theres some do it yourself termite rid sets with bait that are supposed to be good or should l leave it to the experts Re: Termites 3Nov 17, 2018 8:21 am If your home is in a termite declared area (you can check this by googling) then there should have been a termite protection system installed and a certificate provided with occupancy certificate. Check your meterbox or around sub floor access for any stickers about termite protection. Regardless, all homes are at risk of termite infestation and it is just that the probability varies. You can reduce your risk by proper house maintenance and avoid unwise landscaping. It is also likely there will be termites somewhere in the vicinity of your home but that's ok so long as they don't find a way in. Dead trees should be removed, stumps removed also or poisoned. Building expert mentioned the risk of being ripped off with expensive unnecessary treatments , If they pest incpectors do say they found termites and want me to pay for treatment, what should l do ? should l will get a second opinion from another company ? are larger companies safer Re: Termites 9Nov 27, 2018 3:32 pm Hi just to update, l got the full 3 hour termite inspection and good news he found no termites on my house but thinks a dead tree near my house once might have had termites. He said the termite risk is moderate to high because l am on a few acres with 15 gums trees but he said my house is fairly well built against termites as its has steel posts and supports and treated timber in some partsbut of course the house is not termite poof , He said he could apply the preventive chemicals that would protect the house for 8 years that would cost $2,000. l was wondering what people think, should l just get a termite inspection once a year or should l also get the chemical spray for $2000? Re: Termites 10Nov 29, 2018 7:13 am Termite management requires annual inspections because termites can breach or avoid barriers and if they do the inspection will pick up damage before it becomes serious. Imagine you have had termite in for five years and not knowing(because you thought your home is protected). Yes the chemical spray will reduce your risk but not eliminate it. Also, people change things around home at the changes may make it more friendly for termite to get covert access into the home.
