You can buy a moisture meter from Bunnings for $45 or a cheap one on ebay for $15 and you press it against the wall and it will tell you if theres a damp or water problem , the fact that its soft is a bad sign , if it was me l would call a plumber to check water leaks from shower causing it

Did you take photos during the construction stages..more specifically the waterproofing prior to the tiling stage?
