Well anyway we finally took the plunge and decided to pay for plans to be drawn up of the extension we wanted so we could get an accurate quote for what it would cost to build. We recieved our plans yesterday, but they are being refined and will hopefully come back to us today. The changes from this plan will be that the main bedroom will be made 1 m wider and the ensuite would move down a little too. I am very excited, and I just really hope that this can all come in at the budget we have. I think the WIR and shower works well but I htink I'd bring the back of the WIR out in line with the shower, otherwise you will have a tiny piece of glass corner in the room, I think I'd just rather the shower be set inside three walls. I don't like the WC at the end of that long hall, I don't know why for sure but it kind of feels like the main spine of the home ends in the loo. Love the massive family room! I agree with all of your points there - unfortunately that is all of the original part of the house that is 20 years old. I am not sure what the draftsman (or my husband for that matter) was thinking about when they did the WIR -the new plans will have a longer shower and that wall will be back in line with the rest of the WIR. The area marked living is the kid's play area, there will be plantation shutters on top of a half wall on your left as you walk in the front door so you don't see that straight away. The area marked dining is currently our loungeroom and the wall down the hallway that is shown is actually not there. We are thinking that this will become study/sewing room. The area marked meals is our dining area and will remain so. The toilet at the end of the hallway is terrible - and it is between the kid's rooms. When we bought the house they had saloon doors at the top of the hallway - we thought this was to block the view to the toilet! Quote: Love the massive family room! That is the main addition that I am so excited about. Re: We got our plans back - what do you think? 7Sep 10, 2008 6:32 pm ohhhh I'm sorry, I thought this was a new design, new home!
I did think there was something familiar about this plan! Well this is a massive improvement! I would consider another wall at the entry to close off the play room? Not sure if the play room is what I'd want to face as I first entered my home. Re: We got our plans back - what do you think? 8Sep 10, 2008 6:37 pm The entry, living & dining rooms look very strange. And what's that funny little corner entry into the main bedroom ?
Is there a better plan that shows what's going on in the front ? Do the hard jobs first. The room marked dining could then be the playroom as it's up near the bedrooms. This would eliminate a lot of the funny angles (like the master entry area)

Quote: The entry, living & dining rooms look very strange. And what's that funny little corner entry into the main bedroom ? If you notice the shaded angled wall that goes across the room, that is the old wall, the new 90 degree one is the new wall to give us some privacy into our room. There will be a toy cupboard built in to the wall that backs on to the main bedroom. Quote: I'd change the front door to be between the master and the living We did consider this 6 years ago when we bought the house, I now wish we hadn't have been so tight back then. We now have beautiful (an d expensive) timber stairs going up to our front door with gorgeous tropical gardens surrounding them. It would look really silly if we didn't have the door there. I have tried to convince my husband to make the marked dining area the toy area, but for now the toy area works best where it is with it being in sight of the kitchen. Look, I know this isn't going to be the ultimate plan, but we have quite a tight budget due to being on one income with 2 small children. Our plan is to tile it all so that the rooms can change and evolve as our family does. For know we need a bigger lounge/dining area and to get an entertainment area. We have gone without these for 6 years and are ready to comfotably entertain our friends and family. Thanks for your input, I do appreciate it and I really wish we could afford to make some of the changes you are suggesting. Quote: Is there a better plan that shows what's going on in the front ? The plan as it is now is definitely workable but if you made alterations once before and regret some of them, I'd try to get everything right for you this time. In saying that, the hub of the home, the kitchen, dining and back living looks fantastic! Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: We got our plans back - what do you think? 12Sep 10, 2008 8:15 pm I agree the plan is vastly improved, well done.
The loo at the end of the hallway is not ideal but would not be worth the cost to alter just for that reason. The cupboard in the kids area wall that backs on to the master would mean that room doesn't look weird with the corner bit jutting into it. And you will love all the extra space with that HUGE living area! Love it. Make sure you post pics during the reno for us! Re: We got our plans back - what do you think? 13Sep 11, 2008 12:08 am I think the current floorplan has some problems. This is just my personal preference of course, but then you did ask for opinions....
I think the entry area, the 'feature' toilet, awkward master bedroom entry and kids area are all big problems. Alternative attached. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Do the hard jobs first.
