We're hoping to build a switchback staircase similar to this in our house, where it goes up half a flight of stairs to a small landing, and then turns around to the next half flight of stairs.

The staircase manufacturer, however, says that we need to put in supporting columns under where the stairs meet the landing (like in the second diagram). This would obviously detract from the overall aesthetic of the staircase and the free flow underneath it. I wonder if there are any other options to get around this, or if I can't get around it, what would you do with and around those columns to make them look good?
