Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 06, 2008 3:50 pm Our new apartment has some of those large hooks stuck to the walls and doors (because of the lack of towel rails anywhere, the tenants were forced to stick their own towel hooks up), and we obviously now want them gone.
How do we get them off? I've tried pulling them, but oh boy they're STRONG. Is there something we can do? I know there's a technique to removing certain of those sticky picture hooks, but these are different. They don't have that bit of sticker/plastic thing you pull down that easily removes the hook. I'm a bit nervous that even if we use methylated spirits or something to remove it, it'll still have a horrible lump of stickiness there. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: How to remove super strong adhesive from doors & walls? 2Sep 06, 2008 5:27 pm i know eucalyptus oil removes other sticky glue, you could give it a go. Warning you, it does melt plastic, and thinking about it, may remove paint
have you tried a paint scraper behind it to lift it off? Re: How to remove super strong adhesive from doors & walls? 3Sep 06, 2008 5:56 pm Yeah, I've tried. It doesn't even move! I am very weak though. My partner hasn't tried yet. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: How to remove super strong adhesive from doors & walls? 5Sep 06, 2008 7:41 pm That's really weird! Whenever I or DW stick one of those hooks somewhere, it comes off after a week and won't stay on no matter what! They're contrary, aren't they!!!

We use a variety of those stick on hooks at our rented place, and most have stayed on for 5 years, but some just repeatedly fall off. Mysterious indeed. How the hell did I become a senior member!? Re: How to remove super strong adhesive from doors & walls? 7Sep 06, 2008 8:10 pm But seriously, if you guys pull them off by the brute force, they'll almost certainly take some paint or even plaster with them in revenge. I think that the best way would be to slice off the sticky pad on the hook side with a very sharp, thin and flexible blade or a thin steel wire (from a cake cutter perhaps). Once the pad's exposed, soak it with some solvent (water most likely won't work), turps perhaps. At best they leave discoloured paint behind, at worst a hole in plaster. The only surface that survives intact a stick-on hook with an attitude is ceramic tiles.

Thank you! How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: How to remove super strong adhesive from doors & walls? 9Sep 08, 2008 1:56 pm In my experience, the best thing for removing sticky residue is Orange Oil. It won't eat anything except the glue. It is a problem on wall surfaces. You have to soak it in to get it off usually. I usually just keep wiping it on over a period of time to keep it wet for a while.
