Ok, this isn't about pretentious architects designing odd-styled homes. This is about totally impractical and strange design faults (in my mind they're faults) in common, normal, standard apartments or houses.
My new apartment for example. On first (and many subsequent) inspections, it was lovely and normal. It still is, BUT there are several oddities that are annoying and concerning me, and I honestly cannot see WHY the architect did this when designing it...
1. The ensuite is TINY. I cannot put my newly-bought luxurious bath mat on the floor as originally intended, because when you open or close or move the door at all, it would push the mat around. There is literally enough floor space to step inside and close the door behind you, swivel to the toilet or swivel in the opposite way to the shower. I understand they had space constraints, so this I can let go.
2. The shower door is an open out door. I'm not sure why they didn't put a sliding door here as then you wouldn't have to make sure the main door is 100% closed before being able to open the shower door. I guess not many people will be having people coming and going into the ensuite whilst in the shower, but still.
3. The ceiling is SO low in the bathrooms! I'm 5'7" so not unusually tall, and I can touch the ceiling with my hand flat against it and my arm bent, with the elbow at about forehead height. If I was a 6 foot guy, I'd have to duck! Is this weird? (it's a ground floor apartment and I was told the ceilings have to be lower here) It makes the room seem very dark though and claustrophobic, which I don't care for.
4. The main bathroom has hardly any floor space even though it's bigger than the ensuite. Once the washing machine is in place, NO floor space except where you have to walk/stand. We want to put 2 cat litter trays in here, but even 1 will be a tight squeeze.
5. The intercom door buzzer phone thingo is on a wall we really want to use for other purposes, by the kitchen, and we think it should have been put by the front door.
There was something else, but I've forgotten. lol
