Help hallway ceiling expansion joint

Hi ,

We are currently building a single level 32sq meter house with 2.6m ceiling height.

We are currently up to final painting and we have noticed a expansion joint in our main hallway

The builder never indicated we would need an expansion joint, is this a common practice for new house builds? should they have notified us prior to building as it looks ugly.

Thanks
