Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Aug 28, 2008 12:09 pm Just yet another paint question, sorry!
Ok. We’ve settled on Taubmans Portland Stone for the overall wall colour, and Dulux Suede Effects in French Pebble for the one feature wall in the main bedroom. We’re getting a second painting quote today (I hope!) and then we’ll be able to decide who we want to do it and go ahead with it. Thank god! I can’t believe how long it takes to get people to come out and quote and get it organised! I only have 2 hours each day to meet people at our place, after I finish work, and it’s annoying because most of them are free in the mornings when I simply cannot leave work. Anyway, my question now is… I like the Portland Stone a lot, BUT I fear it may be just a LITTLE bit dark for my liking. I want to say to the painters once we’ve settled on one, can they do that colour BUT can they make it 1/4 less strong? Like, not half strength Portland Stone, but rather, 3/4 strength Portland Stone. Is that ok? Is that possible? I just want it a bit less full strength, but not half. I like the colour when there’s only one coat on, but it goes a bit too dark when there’s 2, and we need 2 coats, so…yeah. I need it a bit lighter. Just a bit. Thank you! How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Can painters make slight alterations to colours if you ask t 3Aug 28, 2008 12:47 pm When it comes to this sort of stuff, what I do is get a couple bits of wood the same size of say an old 12inch record, paint them with all the colors and shades I like then pick one. Place them in the room you are doing for true natural lighting on them. Colour Matching 4Aug 28, 2008 3:27 pm Ask a local paint store to make you up a 3/4 strength pot of the colour you want. If they won't or can't ...... get full strength & get another pot of white. Mix a little at a time into the full strenght & paint out, allow to dry before mixing more in. Then, when you get it right ........ Paint out your colour on a BIG bit of heavy duty white card. Cut the sample in half & give half to your choosen painter. He will order the paint he needs and get his supplier to match the colour.
When he starts the job, you can check your half of the sample against the paint to make sure it's right. Good Luck! Timbacare - Save Your Furniture! Unfortunately we cannot get back to the only place around here that actually has the colour we want. We don't drive and it's quite a distance away. There are a few smaller hardware places nearer to us, but they don't have the variety of paints and stuff. One doesn't have any Taubmans at all, another only has a very small selection...it sucks. We just don't have the time. Especially as we're STILL waiting on this second painter to quote us. He was going to come on Wednesday but then couldn't cause he was down the other end of the coast. Then Thursday he couldn't do it. Friday (today) he said he'd be in the area and would let us know in the morning but when he hadn't at almost 12pm, we decided we couldn't just hang around waiting all day so went out, and I said today was no good anymore, but hopefully tomorrow, so we'll see. We don't have time for this. We've decided that if he can't quote tomorrow, we'll just go with the only quote we have. I had no idea getting painting quotes would be so difficult!! I did try 2 other people, but one couldn't talk when I called originally and said he'd call back in 3 days (I called last Friday, he said he'd call Monday) but he never did. The other guy never answered his phone. *sigh* Even the carpet people are difficult to get. One of them didn't show up for our appointment. (he did end up coming the next day on time after I complained and said I was not impressed). Another one I called 2 weeks ago for a quote said he'd get back to me in under an hour but never did, until the other day. By then it was just too late. Is this normal?? Don't they want our business/money!? How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Can painters make slight alterations to colours if you ask t 6Aug 29, 2008 6:13 pm I would never fiddle with a standard colour unless I was absolutely certain I would never need to patch or add to it. If you mess with the colour you will never be able to get a perfect match with another batch. Do the hard jobs first. Sad and annoying ..... but true! As for getting quotes .... sorry but it's normal! It took me 30 phones call to different contractors and more more than 15 appointments to get 3 quotes for a simple 19 mtr timber paling fence. Those 3 where the only ones to turn up on time! Now I have to get quotes for 310 mtrs of wire mesh fence. Ekk!! Timbacare - Save Your Furniture! I don’t get why they don’t want our money and jobs!
Anyway, yeah, I originally wanted to get 5 quotes for the painting, but it’s just too hard. I emailed and called about 8 places, and of the emails, 1 got back to me (only to say they don’t do painting anymore), and of the phone calls, 2 came, one of which was very vague and overly casual and treated it like a family friend job (nothing written down, cash in hand, kept pushing the job back time and time again, told us we’d need to supply our own paint at the last minute, etc), so we really had no choice but to go with the ONE quote we managed to get, which is a bit expensive for our liking but they DO seem very good in every other aspect. We just ran out of time. Even now we’re cutting it close. We need to be out of our rented place by 24 September, which is a Wednesday, and on that day we have to arrange the carpet cleaners to come, and so before that, we have to have moved everything out and have done our own thorough cleaning…and since we can’t take time off work, we’ll have to do this on the weekend…and then so before that, we’ll have to have actually moved out. We’re wanting to move on Thursday/Friday so we have the weekend to unpack and settle in. So that means we have to have carpet down at least a few days before we move in, so at the latest by the Monday before we move, and that means we have to have painting done and ready by the end of NEXT week at the latest. AAAGH! Lol. We wish we hadn’t now spent so much valuable time running around trying to get quotes. Ugh. Anyway, at least the painters we’ve got can complete it next week they say, thank GOD. In a lot of areas and with a lot of trades the old "get lots of quotes" rule is completely out the door. I went through five electricians - three came to quote, but not one actually delivered a quote. Finally after explaining the sad story to my builder I got someone through him. Got the quote & they got the job. Do the hard jobs first.
