Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Oct 30, 2017 7:57 am Thinking of arranging an inspection on this ASAP and have advised my builder of this - just want to get some more opinions before i investigate further to see if they need to do anything else to remediate my concerns or if my concern is ill placed before they proceed.
edited topic name to be more acurrate re my question It was poured 2 weeks ago today during a period of hot days - was forecast 31 but reached 32 or 33 that day and the next 2 days am looking at 3rd party or possibly getting their engineering consultant firm to check it. Entry Slab edge - there are several sections like this Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Bathroom shower on external wall of house Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ At the time i discussed it with someone i know in the industry and was advised the slab is treated to prevent moisture loss so shouldn't be a problem but i was out there yesterday and noticed it looks and feels brittle around edging and has some crumbling and looks at its worse aroudn teh barrier between ensuite shower and slab edge My friend in the industry will be monitoring build from framing onwards but isnt trained for slab inspections Maybe im being pedantic or overthinking it but in the last 12 months i have walked through a lot of house construction sites and dont recall seeing anything looking as sloppy as this. but since they weren't mine maybe i did not notice or the sections had been covered up by time i walked through Bricks where due to be delivered last thursday but have not turned up and timber was due to be delived today but im expecting that to be delayed as found out last thursday night the timber company was using an old version of floorplan - dealt with this issue last friday Re: should i have concerns re this slab 3Oct 30, 2017 4:00 pm i am sure nothing to worry about but have organised an inspection for it on wednesday morning to put my worries to rest and SS will let me know his thoughts when he is in that area next as well. would rather be re-assured now than worry about it down the track Re: should i have concerns re this slab 4Oct 30, 2017 4:08 pm There's nothing wrong with that slab that I can see from your pics, that crumbling stuff is excess concrete slurry and will clean off, the concrete chipped off usually happens. I can't tell you 100% there is nothing wrong, but I can say it looks to be structually sound if not cosmetically displeasing. Re: should i have concerns re this slab 5Oct 30, 2017 4:33 pm i dont doubt its structurally sound etc and know im making a mountain out of a anthill but getting it nspected on wednesday as a re-assurance as lots dont show up in a photo of something like that and also a couple of pics focusing on the roughest parts don't give the rest of it due credit. Its all about re-assurance so i dont worry about it down the track - at the end of the day thats what construction inspections are for - and making sure things are fixed at the earliest possible time to avoid less stress down the track. Re: should i have concerns re this slab 6Oct 30, 2017 4:47 pm Hi Entilzha The slab looks Fine as mentioned the minor edge chipping results from stripping off the formwork It generally cover or easily fixed by following trades..IMO there No need to worry..It's great you have taken photos and asked tho. If that's where you meant is crumbling, yeah that's not good. That section of chipping looks sandy it shouldn't, if that is segregation only on the edge like that no worries, but if it's everywhere that's a big problem. I'm sorry for not looking at that picture more carefully. Added info: Concrete is a mixture of water, sand, cement and aggregates, when over vibrated it suffers from segregation, whereas the mixture falls apart or segregates and it's no longer concrete and won't take a load. Re: should i have concerns re this slab 8Nov 01, 2017 11:09 am all good as i was expecting but peace of mind is worth it. was also good to talk to someone else about some other related aspects of the build process the chipping wasnt anything to worry about. though they have modified the bathroom shower recess a little Thanks for all replies.
