Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Aug 26, 2008 6:04 pm I'm a bit nervous. I really want the painting of my apartment to look GREAT. No annoying little imperfections, no bits of paint going onto the cornice or architrave that shouldn't be there, no unevenness, no washed out bits, etc...PERFECTION is what I want, basically.
I've got 2 quotes (well, I've got 1 quote but will have a second one in 2 days). One is from a company that's got a website, does building repairs as well as painting, etc. They've been excellent in terms of customer service so far and are all really lovely. Their price is ok. The second quote is from a company that is small, has no website, I can't find it in the online Yellow Pages (doesn't mean they're not listed though), I THINK it's just one guy but he has a painter he uses for jobs and such. This guy is also very nice. He came to quote me today but said it'd be cheaper for me if I dealt direct with the painter (who is also very nice and who is coming to quote in 2 days)... Who is likely to do the better job in terms of appearance of the painting!?!?! Just because one place is bigger and has a website, does that always have to mean they're better at painting?? Also, I don't know if either are Dulux (or any other brand) accredited. Is that hideously bad?? Lastly, if you choose a painter but before they do much you're not happy with how they're doing it, can you "fire" them, get someone else, and not have to pay the first painter? lol How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Painters...are they all much the same?? 2Aug 26, 2008 9:02 pm The size of a company and a flashy website (or lack there of) is no real indication as to the quality of their work - the only way you can obtain a good idea is by word of mouth. Ask them for customer testimonials - feedback from satisfied customers.
And if they start the work and you aren't happy...well, their time is your money, so expect the bill for any work done..... Good luck with your choice Built a Clarendon 'Balmain' 2008 Re: Painters...are they all much the same?? 3Aug 26, 2008 9:47 pm i think it really helps to go see some recent work they've done
I have just hired a painter to do all external work (weatherboard) in october and i wanted to see their work b4 i committed To me, its important that its a professional job ask to see somewhere they have done recently - any good painter would love to show u Re: Painters...are they all much the same?? 4Aug 26, 2008 10:56 pm Quote: PERFECTION is what I want, basically Perfection and low price - sorry the 2 don't go together. Ask to see some of their other jobs - that will give you an indication. and besides there is more to life than perfection in a paint job - sure it shouldn;t be sloppy - but perfection and lower cost is a tall order. Steve Re: Painters...are they all much the same?? 5Aug 26, 2008 11:26 pm a mate of mine is a top painter. He painted some of mums house and it was flawless! not cheap for most but perfection all the way. as time passes you can tell the good jobs from the bad or cheap He says there are really big differences in not only the painters but the companies that employ them, how their costs relate to the job quality. If the paint job is very important to you (and it is for me as well) make sure you get a recommendation from someone you know. We've had some shocking paint jobs done over the years and paid good money for them as well. We can always tell by looking at the woodwork and where the painter has cut in - particularly the corners inside the window reveal and cornice. You can also sometimes see brushmarks and poor coverage (watered down paint or one coat system). I also get cranky if I can see dirt which has stuck to the paint on woodwork grrrr . If they use black in the paint you can tell at night if there is a black ring around the incadescent light. The painter at our current build has not done a fabulous job but it is passable. Everyone has different standards so make sure you see a job they have done before signing on the dotted line . But then I'm fussy about paint ... and floors for some reason . Re: Painters...are they all much the same?? 8Aug 30, 2008 5:41 pm Well, we got the second quote today...they think they can do it in one single day. Is that bad? It's a 2 bedroom medium sized apartment. Just walls. No ceilings, cornices, architraves, skirtings, doors, kitchen or bathrooms to be painted. Just a bit of patching from a crack and some nails/picture hooks.
They say it'd be around $850 all up, including $250 or so for paint. Is this ok? It sounds SO cheap. The other quote we got was $1,700 for the painting (incl. paint) and $360 for patching the crack. The other place we were going through a building company who then utilised a painter...this quote is direct through the painter. (who I was referred to by another building company who said it'd be cheaper to go direct through the painter) Nothing has been mentioned about a contract. Do ALL painters get you to sign something and if they don't, is that really bad? How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Ask the council if there is a chance of getting build over easement exemption. Sometimes easements are unused and 24cm is not all that much. Good luck. And yes any builder… 2 13745 A question.
