Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jun 30, 2017 9:06 am Hi! Can someone give me an idea what are the differences between building surveyor and building inspector? If you need someone to check the building process to make sure that the builder is subcontracting to do a good job. We signed up a building surveyor that is recommended by the builder but now they ask us if we will hire a private building inspector. So building surveyor and building inspector are two different thing? Any recommendations in Melbourne area? Thank you, Jcboy Re: Difference between building surveyor/building inspector 2Jun 30, 2017 10:27 am The NCC is free on line so you don't need expert building inspectors although you do need NNC compliance checks and that is done by a building surveyor. Having the builder recommend his own Building surveyor isn't ideal because he will probably turn a blind eye on noncompliance and there are examples in Melbourne's Lacrosse building and London's Grenfell Towers. Here in WA engineers check buildings for noncompliance where it has to be certified as" equivalent or better than" what is in the Codes & Standards and "Fit For Purpose" I suspect the outcome of the Grenfell Fire Inquiry will strengthen the engineer's position while they clamp down on unprofessional Certifiers. The reason why the legislation was changed to allow the buyer to appoint their own surveyor was because of the things that were going on when builders had the surveyors in their pockets. People hire building consultants who do inspections, the term building inspector creates confusion because a building inspector is a different kettle of fish. In Victoria, building consultants need no qualifications, you need to check their credentials carefully. 3in1 Supadiverta. Rainwater Harvesting Best Practice using syphonic drainage.
