Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jun 23, 2017 4:25 pm Hi, I have a relatively wide land around 18 meters.., no issue with length wise.. Do you think its advantages to intentionally build a narrow house of 11.5 meters (Max wide, of course some parts of house may be only 10-10.5 meter wide.) With this I get more natural lighting on both sides. However in frontal view will it look funny?. Or since I have wide land I should maximise the width of the house... Welcome any comments. Thanks Re: Building a narrow house on a wide land advantages. 3Jun 24, 2017 11:14 am Agree with Beetaloo. Ideally you should build a rectangular house, along the E-W axis, so the longer sides face north & south. Locate your living areas to the north, so they receive ample winter sunshine, & are shaded in summer. This is called "passive solar design". Design a house this way & you'll have a home that is light & bright, warm in winter & cool in summer. More can be found on this very informative government website, http://www.yourhome.gov.au/passive-design/orientation If you have an east or west frontage the house could appear to be a little narrow. But 12m isn't bad, the double garage will help widen it up. In this case try to build quite close to the southern boundary, so you have a sunny northern yard & are not overshadowed by your northern neighbour.
