Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 26, 2017 10:49 pm I'm a first home owner and I have started saving for a deposit to buy my block in Northam, WA. The blocks are super cheap there for the size and only 40 minutes to Midland. I have started to make a step by step list of what i need to do to get the slab on the ground. I am being realistic i know it will take at least 2/3 years before i even think about signing a building contract so in the meantime i want to learn as much as possible about every process. In a nutshell i will be: 1. Buying a block 2. Booking a consult with Superdraft (tailor a service package that results in final submission plans and 3D renderings that i can present to a builder to get an accurate quote). After these 2 steps i will be getting quoted on the build being completed to lock up stage only (and to completion stage to compare price differences). I'm not owner building (all structural aspects will be taken care of by the builder) but will be subcontracting my own trades to complete the fit out of the remainder of the house as i wont be able to finance an entire build. I would love some feedback on my naive approach to this daunting journey as it is a large investment. I'm only 21 and need all the advice i can get, especially from builders and other professionals within the building sector. Can't wait to hear back! Thanks! In WA you either owner-builder or not. It is very common for owner-builders to say they're only owner-building the completion and fit-out work though. From a technical and licensing point of view though, you're actually an owner builder for the entire project, with a single contractor (the registered builder) to start with, and more contractors later. This is important to clarify because even though the registered builder might tell you his insurance will cover that first stage, his insurance company will say otherwise.
