Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 01, 2017 7:46 pm After eight years in our not-so-new-any-more home, we've finally gotten around to adding some much-needed extra storage. The difference it makes is amazing. We already added an attic ladder and 10m2 of flooring in the roof a few years back (with access from the garage), which is great for rarely used things like the Christmas tree and camping gear and so on, but this is just We called in the pros from Flexirobes and we're very happy with the result. Our walk in robes have been properly fitted out - this one is my husband's. It's finished in a light-coloured woodgrain laminate and those drawers hold a lot more than you would think. The skinny one top right is divided into compartments for ties and belts. No more ties slipping off stupid hangers and ending up on the floor! http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i18/kerrynw/IMG_9058_zps9vswcrco.jpg Mine is similar, but with a lot more shelves for shoes and handbags. Less drawers, but I have a tallboy in the bedroom. Kid's wardrobes are just basic white melamine - theirs are hidden behind doors, so who cares? http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i18/kerrynw/IMG_9056_zpsames0zxu.jpg My favourite room is the laundry though. The original layout had a "broom cupboard" in the mud room, but that was just fitted with a shelf and hanging rail: your basic wardrobe fit out. So I had shelves built into the cupboard instead and had custom floor-to-ceiling cupboards built into the empty space next to it as well. Handy for drying shirts, or to hang up clothes as I iron them. http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i18/kerrynw/IMG_9060_zpsfypojnbb.jpg A whole wall of storage. <3 http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i18/kerrynw/IMG_9061_zpsxuuzbrqp.jpg From the mud room end: http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i18/kerrynw/IMG_9059_zps7dwmmwib.jpg The whole project took two and a half days to install (plus a couple of days for us to rip out the old shelves and patch and paint the walls). It was a huge pain to do, as we had the contents of five wardrobes plus the laundry cupboard spread all round the house, but totally worth it in the end. My advice: Get wardrobes and cupboards fitted out during the build - the shelves were nailed and glued in place and chunks of plaster came away when we removed them. It ended up being a much bigger job than expected to patch and paint. Re: Home storage upgrade 3May 10, 2017 9:25 pm Is it possible do you know to ask for the WIRs to be left without shelving? I am thing of using IKEA for mine once I have got the keys. @Madora Dreamer Re: Home storage upgrade 4May 11, 2017 6:44 am Absolutely. It's what we were originally going to do, but we ran out of funds to do the robes before moving in. Alternatively, if you're using IKEA units, you can have the builder set the shelf at a height that suits you, and just slot your units in underneath (the rails come out easily enough if you want to remove them).
