Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 01, 2017 2:39 pm Hi I needto replace the balcony railings as part of a reno. I don't think they are currently high enough to meet code, and they need modernising anyway. There will be a covered deck below the balcony, and the existing balcony will be integrated into a frame to extend a roof over it. Therefore I was thinking to avoid using glass panelling or other see through railing as all you se will be the steel roof. Was maybe considering taking the railing out and then brick and render, or leave the railing as the support and using some kind of paneling (like masterwall panels) that could be rendered over the top. Any suggestions on what could be a cheap solution to replace the railings? thanks Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Replace balcony railings 2May 01, 2017 3:24 pm You'd have to consider the additional weight of bricks over steel. Might require additional engineering so may not work our so cheap. The idea to cover the current rails has merit provide you actually want something solid. Personally, I would go with something more open. Re: Replace balcony railings 3May 01, 2017 7:33 pm I don't think it would be a cheap solution but masterwall panels sounds good. An engineer has already assessed and drawn up plans for the redsign to accommodate the extended roof. Mobing the existing posts out and supporting with steel beams. Much more steel. Much stronger. Re: Replace balcony railings 6May 04, 2017 3:44 pm Areas with a drop 1 metre and over need to have a minimum of 1 metre high balustrade. As previously mentioned you will need to consider the engineering if you are going to use brick due to the weight as well as how the brick will be anchored into the existing slab. If you decide on bricking in the area you could then dress up the top the brick area with a square or round handrail connected to the brick with railing supports, this would assist structurally. With this option you will need to consider drainage of that area. I see that it looks like there will be a pool in the yard, if you decide on glass or wire balustrade you will have a nice view of that area from the windows and/or that top deck. ok thanks - yes was wondering if that should have been listed as Option Three! 2 6203 Your house roof does not show rusting other than some surface rust on the flashings. In my opinion you dont need to replace or paint the roof other than treat surface rust… 1 5994 |
