Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Mar 03, 2017 8:49 pm I was told by site supervisor they found a few small breaks in the drainage pipe by using camera detection. Site supervisor said they would fix the breaks. 1. Is it normal? 2. should I be concerned with it? if yes, should I get another independent company to check the breaks are fixed? 3. what kind of company should I call if I want to reassure myself and how much would it cost? Re: Breaks in Drainage Pipe 3Mar 04, 2017 3:16 pm Find out best practice by speaking to some experienced plumbers, Google for information as well, this way you will know a cheap fix, builder has done right thing so far, but you can't necessarily take it for granted that it will be fixed to best practice. Re: Breaks in Drainage Pipe 4Apr 19, 2017 7:48 am The fact that they went out to look for it means that they will get a contractor (usually very experienced as they do it everyday) and seal the cracks from the inside. This is a huge cost to them of which they will strive to do it right the first time. It costs the builder $100 per hour to inspect and $2,400 or so to seal, plus material. 1. Is it normal? Normal, No - Common, Yes 2. should I be concerned with it? if yes, should I get another independent company to check the breaks are fixed? The fact that they have spotted it, you should have 95% less of a concern. It took our builder 6 years to find our cracked pipes. Over the years, water will get to the soil below your foundation and cause all issues. Until they did the checks, we had no idea that there were cracked pipes. So the fact they spotted em, you are in a better position. 3. what kind of company should I call if I want to reassure myself and how much would it cost? You can get a plumber that specializes in pipe inspection and repair.... at $100 per hour (that's builders rate) and it takes half to a day to check your whole house One think I would insist and this is something the supervisor would be fully aware of is if the roof trusses are "free" from the walls. What this means is that when the chippy nails in the movement plate, it allows the trusses to move up and down freely to the walls. If they nail it in too hard or don't let enough "play" in the plate, it could pull up your walls. Adam.M You can get a plumber that specializes in pipe inspection and repair.... at $100 per hour (that's builders rate) and it takes half to a day to check your whole house . This is helpful information for others of us lurking too. Thank you Adam. We had a plumber complete an inspection of our large home in under an hour. Couldn't get the camera into a few of the areas we wanted the pipes inspected due to specific concerns of possible damage during build. We weren't reassured. Feel even less reassured now that you've indicated that it typically inspection of whole house takes 1/2 day minimum. I am to have the pipes reinspected after they are cleaned. Will look at a company that specialises in this as per your and Insider's suggestion. Can they use camera to look at pipes under the slab too? Re: Breaks in Drainage Pipe 9Apr 28, 2017 7:15 am If your drainage pipes are broken then that is potentially a serious issue and a risk to foundation material. In my view, broken pipes must be replaced and drains tested on completion. You can also flood test individual sections of the stormwater pipes. If the leaks are not large then the plumbers can reline the pipes instead of digging up replacing them but it will require a plumbers expert judgement . I have seen some plumbers find leaks in stormwater pipes after a previous plumbing inspection had given the pipes the all clear so good equipment, experience and professionalism count for everything.
